I could see that. Philadelphia is pretty much like a city another country. Third-world country, that is.
I shouldn't say that too loud. I don't want them to start throwing batteries at me.

RX7 Loses Wheels, Very Sad - YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eeADBRw9xCo)
i think thats been posted here before. happened in '07. anyway, from jalopnik:
-----------------------------
Hello all,
I was at the event and know the guy who owns the car. (No it wasn't me)
I was in the paddock area next to him changing wheels at the same time as him. I watched him torque all of them. I even borrowed his torque wrench to tighten mine (I always forget something after I get on the road).
He went to a wheel/tire business and asked for spline drive lug nuts for his particular make/model/year car for the Enkeis, and that's what they gave him. He did not purchase the tires or wheels from them, just the lug nuts.
The lug nuts where sheared off the studs. Several members lifted a corner of the car to slide a jack underneath it. With a few more jacks, blocks of wood, etc, they were able to mount the stock wheels and stock lugs nuts (at least 3 per wheel) back on, torque them and drive the car off course. The design of the car, possilbly for aerodynamics, tucks all mechanicals on the underside a little higher than the body line, or lowest part of the brake rotors. Not even the exhaust was really scratched.
I'm not a mechanic, but the mechanics theories there was that the lug nuts where the incorrect size, but they were just small enough to grip the outer edge of the threads (as I mentioned, they torqued to 75-80 ft/lbs without complaint).
Hopefully, the only damage is to the body and brakes.

From the article:
This marks the second year in a row (and sixth since the race's inception in 1916) that a competitor has died. Last year, Bobby Goodwin, 54, died when he lost control of his bike shortly after crossing the finish line.
Makes me wonder if paving the road was a wise idea. I believe the final portion of pavement was completed this year. IMHO, the original loose surface probably gave the driver/rider more warning when traction limit was being reached. On pavement with sticky tires, the slip angle is so much smaller that going over the traction limit is more abrupt, and catching it more difficult. When your run-off area is a massive drop-off.....

After totaling my Boxster a couple of weeks ago, I thought I might buy a 944 to tide me over the winter so I inspected one last Sunday. It was a nice car, but after considering my options, I decided against it and sent the owner a note saying that, although I thought it was a nice car, I decided against purchasing a 944.
Not 15 minutes passed and I received the following email from the owner: I decided I wouldn’t sell you the car anyway because I didn’t like the fact that you would drive it in the winter, I didn’t like the way you drove it, and most importantly, I didn’t like you.

It's likely due to the large number of stray coon dogs lying under every jacked car in the state that allow them to justify lifting a car from a single tire as it provides that extra safety margin when it comes crashing down.

A few months ago my track car (which sits outside) developed a bad fuel leak from the filter outlet line near the tank with the system pressurized. Over the weekend finally had a chance to replace the hose and diagnose.
After replacing the hose, I was changing a weak hood strut and think I found the suspect.

FWIW, I have first hand experience that brakekleen will asphyxiate a mouse (very quickly I might add!) It's what was closest at hand when I found one. Soak the little bugger w/ a direct shot and will be dead in seconds. Fumes overwhelm their little lungs and heart. I'll admit I didn't think of that at the time. In my head I had a vision of lighting a lighter and watching the flame chase down the trail of fluid he left as he ran and setting the little bastard on fire:twisted: Luckily I didn't have to try that;)

Ok, later August 2012; we flew into Fairbanks, paned for gold, dusk ATV tour of Denali featuring finding a still steaming pile of bear scat, Guy got killed and mostly eaten by a brown the day after we left. Ended up probably being one of three we'd had breakfast with on our last day in Denali. But none of us could connect a face to name when we heard the announcement. Got stalked by a bull moose while on a self-guided walking glacier tour. If you don’t know they are get very aggressive that time a year. Move slowly from mostly clear area and to tree thicket. Horseback riding in Kenai, narrow gage train through White Pass to the Klondike and several whitewater rafting trips spread out over 10 days. On one (Denali) our guide wrenched his shoulder when the raft's ore kicked back off a tree snag so I got a chance to "pilot" the raft through a couple of sets of rapids and into the pickup point.
Indian maiden was actually pretty enthusiastic, and while not a wolf the guide said his dog was very experienced... Actually, the dog liked to range a head, kind of an early warning system, and guide encouraged "chatter" as we rode for same reason Light drizzle that day kept bugs down and made the forest quiet beyond description. Drop offs on side of some trails provide amassing views!!!
I had an older .357 6" Dan Wesson (exposed barrel nut) in a cross draw, and a SWEET older 45/70 Winchester that I’ve lusting after ever since. Lever action long gun was stored in a traditional front mounted saddle scabbard. L was concerned about follow-up shots, so choose a very ancient 4" barred .38 Special S&W wheel gun in a traditional western(ish) rig, stoked with silver tips (there was a qual session behind the horse barn. Her groups were tighter but then the DW spit .357+Ps L originally wanted a saddle rig for the SW. But our guide pointed out that the horses would likely bolt for the barn at the first sniff of predator. So having it on your hip, while laying on your back, watching your horse retreat made a LOT more sense than watching it disappear through the trees on your saddle.
Drover slickers may have made getting to anything inside a challenge but did keep us reasonably dry. Kicking back in front of a wood stove at the end of the trail waiting for my 1st, of several toddies…. Priceless!!!111!!!oneeleven.
I have to admit that 4 wheeling through the old forestry areas outside of Skagway was really more in my wheel house than trying to project my will on 1600 lbs. of dog food with a mind of its own. All in all good times, even with the claw marks on the outside door of our room at the Copper River Lodge. The tour bus breaking down next to the family of browns hunting a moose café was interesting…
Oh, and we did get to see a huge calving of the Columbian Glacier on one of our last days! How big??? The ~60’ boat we were on needed to turn toward the glacier to ride out the wake.
BTW, ice from Glaciers is crystal clear, any color it has is reflected light or pollution. The crew proved this buy scooping a good sized chuck out of the bay to show everyone. 49003

Over all the mask worked very as no one at the gas station/truck stop was able to identify me later :p
We were getting ready to start another leg and I was belting in so just hadn't positioned it yet. It seemed strange to have the grass and trees so damp (note rain pans for walking) but dust on the trails so thick that people looked ash colored at end of day. When we circled back down by the water in the left background we saw a pod of whales making their way out to sea. Was told the channel there was ~800' deep.

The cable was attached to the belly of the chopper and then to something else. As soon as the guy on the ground grabs the cable, he pulled it taught, which put the cable right in the path of the rotor.
All-in-all, the whole setup seems pretty dumb. If there is that little clearance between the rotors and a cable that pulling it taught puts it into the rotor path, then it seems like the whole idea should be reconsidered.

I have done dozens of riggings, lift offs and touchdows for military and civilian sling loads. This accident is the result of multiple failures as 99% of all aviation accidents are; equipment, planning, training, human error all came together as usual.
Here is what it looks like happened from my very cheap internet seat.
After the load was delivered to the top of the tower at left the hook failed to release. There was no secondary release (not uncommon on civ birds) but there was no back up shackle a few feet below the belly where the tower crew could unhook the load either (BAD procedure). Now we have the often fatal single point failure. For some unknown reason the bird was not waived off to land the load back at the take off point. Returning with the load is done all the time when things are not going according to plan. Doom approaches.
Now you have a helicopter tethered to a tower. Mr. Murphy loves this sort of stuff.
The accident happens when the ground crewman pulls the cable tight moving section between his hand and tower directly into the MAIN rotor which whips it around into the tail/tail rotor breaking it off.
Once the decision to land was made I think the accident was almost inevitable. Without the main rotor being danger close to the tower the cable length does not appear sufficient to allow the helicopter to land without getting the main rotor tangled in the cable. I have never done a tower lift but I doubt its standard practice to run enough cable to allow for a tethered landing.
No secondary release.
Failure to fly away.
From the hind sight is 20/20 internet cheap seats

^ Really good insight, thanks. That helps makes sense of what I saw in the video.

Hollywood has been lying to me all my life. If a chopper hit a cable and fell to the ground like that in any movie, the fireball would have roasted everyone on the ground.

And the runaway motor would break away and fly around or explode. In this case it ramped down after a bit.

The crew member in the back of the copter looks like he took a beating. Having the rotor mech. partially break off probably meant he was hit by something inside.

Have flown many FAR Part 133 (External Load) with various civilian Helicopters. Requirement is a mechanical release in addition to the electrical release on the hook. No idea what the pre work briefing would have been, but obviously inadequate or they were not listening!!. Once the rotor hits a cable it is often dragged down into the tail rotor and can easily twist the whole tail off. Turbine engines will continue to run for a while after the transmission takes a dump like that. Fire is a real possibility, but needs fuel to leak from somewhere, ruptured tanks, fuel lines etc. When I was hauling Christmas trees, had an electric release plus mechanical cable release, either foot or hand operated to the hook directly under the helicopter and another electrical release to the hook at the bottom of 30 ft of cable. Always checked to see that all 3 worked before hooking up a load. Once had a bucket on a fire fighting contract break the hook open in turbulence, lucky it did not hit anything, but one tries to not overfly anything it could hurt.
Looked at it again, and seems the release did not work, hung up, guy on ground jumps up to try and tug on it to get it to open and that pulls the cable into the rotor. Probable one of the blades chopped the tail off.

Roundel's latest video has something interesting in it. What's up with the Hollywood style video camera that the guy was trying to reposition; to continue filming(?). Almost like this was an intentional incident.
Hmmm....the original video link is no longer available now......

I think the crew member was the pilot and sitting in the front before the incident.

Wondered about that as well, don't usually have a crew member aboard when lifting. Surprising if seat back gave way like that.

in second video you can see where the seat has flattened out and the pilot's legs are still in the front. considering the forces that took the rest of the chopper apart not too surprised the seat failed. I would guess that along with most of the aircraft weight savings was a factor in the seat build
The end of the second video shows the cable hit clearly. Rotor took it right around and through the tail. Lot of people in close range to a violent event and they all walk away.

Wow. This was apparently televised on live TV (which explains the camera man I noted..). Apparently a Christmas Tree raising gone wrong.

I'm better off either way than him so... I could see the right handers helmet through the top window so figured someone was or had gotten in back to see if they could figure out a solution that didn't = crashing.
I've been in a couple of hard landings where the bird didn't fly again that day. Remember feeling a lot shorter for a while after! Even had to untangle an upside down 60 gunner from a failed repel out of one. It was raining so static was an issue...
Wonder if vid timed or taken down because someone was hurt bad??

The youtube video was allegedly posted by the camera man. He states in the notes that anyone copying the video and reposting would be taken down along with some other interesting details like he was the guy yanking the pilot from the plane. Linking to his youtube is apparently OK.

6.) When Everyone Around You Hates On It
A lot of times being a car enthusiast means doing what makes you happy and not caring what other people think. But if you’re troubled by ridicule by your friends, family, fellow enthusiasts, service advisors, mechanics, and of course forum trolls, maybe take a step back and rethink your purchase.
