Rhinos were up there with buffalo among the most lethal animals in Africa. They will charge anything, and have trashed many a game drive vehicleincludi g the contents thereof. The animals in the pic are likely in a viewing park - one of the many disneyfied parks close to major cities where tourists can see animals which are far from wild.

Damn right! I remember being in a small boat on Lake Naivasha outside of Nairobi when a herd of hippo popped up around the boat. Hippos uber territorial, and are expert at turning small boats over and killing the contents. It was major pucker time, but managed to stay frosty and maneuver away without pis$$ing them off.
FWIW, the major killers in Africa rank something like this:
1. Hippo
2. Mosquito [malaria and dengue fever kill a LOT of Africans]
3. Humans [killing fellow humans]
4. Elephant [usually tourists charged down while wandering around in a game park]
5. Black Mamba [bite to death time without anti-venom around an hour]
6. Nile Crocodile [anyone for a swim in the river?]
7. Lion [usually injured of sick males that can't hunt faster prey]
8. Puff Adder [great camo, hiding beside game trails, along comes a tasty human]
9. Cape Buffalo [Have killed more game hunters than any other animal. Mean perma-pi$$ed animals]
10. Rhino
Turns out that the pic Buttdoc posted was taken just before the girl was badly gored by that rhino.
"A South African woman was attacked and severely injured yesterday by a rhino while on safari in South Africa. This photo of her was taken just before the incident. Note they are standing out of their vehicle and ridiculously close to one of the most dangerous animals on earth.
A common thread in many of the safari "accidents" that make the news, is the general lack of common sense shown by the injured party, or in this case, reportedly by the owner of the reserve himself. According to the Telegraph -- "Game park owner Alex Richter had reportedly told a group of visitors it was safe to get out of the safari vehicle to take photos, and he even used food to coax the rhinos closer." According to the Beeld, an Afrikaans newspaper, he encouraged the young woman to get closer for a better photo"

Despite his failure, instability, and senseless killings, this made me laugh:
After the first two killings, Dorner tried to steal a boat in San Diego and flee to Mexico, but the former Navy veteran tangled a rope in the outboard motor and couldn't start it, authorities said. Then he fled to the Big Bear Lake resort area, where his truck axle broke, stranding him on Feb. 7, just ahead of a heavy snowstorm.

Picked up a little something extra down in San Fran Anchorage ....

Yep ... years ago we would have done this. Hotwork on a tanker down a days in port ... forget about it. Between company safety policies, California's environmental laws and the USCG watching ... nahh that wasn't going to happen. Worst part was since we found the chain hooked to our anchor California and the USCG thought we should have to pull the rest of the chain up at our expense while still paying the port an anchorage fee.
Vicegrip
02-17-2013, 06:56 PM
I was wondering why you guys had to hual it up. I was sure there was a good reason you guys did not cut it. 6 ton of chain not = to a couple days idle.
ducatithunder
02-17-2013, 07:00 PM
Yep ... someone else left it. We had to pick it up. IT was funny because they tried to haul anchor that evening and had a mess. The mates trying to fix it added another day as they made it worse. Then we had to wait for a barge the next day and USCG approval. The chain on the barge was what we pulled off the anchor. The rest was marked with a buoy to be retrieved later.

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Federal prosecutors say a New Jersey man whose bid to carjack a Porsche failed because he couldn't drive a stick shift is now headed to prison.
Anthony Reynolds of Newark received a 55-month sentence Monday. He had pleaded guilty last September to motor vehicle theft.
Prosecutors say the 18-year-old Reynolds and an accomplice were traveling in a stolen BMW when they came up behind a Porsche 911 Turbo in Newark in March 2012.
Armed with a .38 caliber revolver, Reynolds ordered the Porsche owner out of the car. But his accomplice took off in the BMW, leaving Reynolds to struggle with the Porsche's manual transmission.
The Porsche's owner flagged down police and Reynolds tried to flee on foot. But he was captured after a brief chase.

Whatever you do do NOT do this! Sezeriously just don't do it.
Get yourself some...
black powder -gun shop.
3/32 fuse -hobby shop or internets
standard printer/typing paper -pilfer it from work
packing tape. strapping tape works real well -see above or break down and see below.
2 part 5 min epoxy is all you need. -hardware store
Roll 6 sheets of paper so you end up with an 8 inch long tube with about a 3/8 hole in the middle. 3/8 or slightly smaller to start.
Wrap a band of tape around the middle and 2 more each an inch in from each end.
Drill a fuse hole right in the middle and stuff in the fuse far enough so you can see it inside the tube. Hole should be sized so the fuse goes in snug.
Mix up a little 5 min epoxy. Fold in a layer of paper in the end of the tube so you make a pocket about 1 inch deep and dribble in the epoxy untill the pocket is 3/4 full. Fold in some more layers of the paper letting the epoxy flow between the layers of paper. More layers folded in the better.
Wait 5 min flip the tube over and fill with black powder up to the fuse only. No more is needed. Some air space is needed. Repeat the fold in and epoxy thing on the other end.
This will make a report that is FAR louder than an M-80. Do not try this at home.
Or get some dry ice at Harris Teeter. Put some hot water into a plastic coke bottle. 20 oz are loud, 2L are down right impressive simply ajust the amount of dry ice to suit the container. (coke or diet coke type only, water bottle caps are too flimsy) Quickly drop in 2 or 3 chunks of dry ice and put the cap on tight. Wait for the booom! No smoke, no cops, males from 8 to 80 will laugh and high 5 and females of all ages will shake their heads.
BTW Don't do this at Disney World....

Flash is made with about 30% aluminum powder. Just the folks at Morton Thickol about aluminum powder. It makes a great propellant but goes Boom when not handled right. fine grain black does not have the power per pound and is slower burn but "slower" is still very fast over modern smokless compounds. OTOH it is cheap and easy to get and stable for the most part. About 6 months ago I mixed a pound of 20 year old black powder with 10 pounds of wet dirt and chucked it out.
No worrez about ATF as no one would ever do anything like make a noise maker from paper wraped black powder.
