U.S. Credit Rating Cut by S&P for First Time on Deficit Reduction Accord

By John Detrixhe - Aug 5, 2011

The U.S. had its AAA credit rating downgraded for the first time by Standard & Poor’s on concern spending cuts agreed on by lawmakers to raise the nation’s borrowing limit won’t be enough to reduce record deficits.

S&P dropped the ranking one level to AA+, after warning on July 14 that it would reduce the rating in the absence of a “credible” plan to lower deficits even if the nation’s $14.3 trillion debt limit was lifted. The U.S. was awarded the top credit ranking by New York-based S&P in 1941. It kept the outlook at “negative.”

‘The downgrade reflects our opinion that the fiscal consolidation plan that Congress and the Administration recently agreed to falls short of what, in our view, would be necessary to stabilize the government’s medium-term debt dynamics,” S&P said in a statement today.

Demand for Treasuries has surged even with the specter of a downgrade as investors saw few alternatives to the traditional refuge during times of risk as concern increased global growth is slowing and Europe’s sovereign debt crisis is spreading. The action could still hurt the U.S. economy over time by increasing the cost of mortgages, auto loans and other types of lending tied to the interest rates paid on Treasuries. JPMorgan Chase & Co. estimated that a downgrade would raise the nation’s borrowing costs by $100 billion a year.

WOW, so when I instructed you with NASA it was in a twisted car? LOL. As I often say, you went really fast until you went off ;)

Funny story, I had not seen Clarke in maybe 15 years and got pulled in at BSR to take him out (I think he was about to advance groups). Show up at his car helmet on, him the same. Went out with him on the last session of the day and tore up the track with him. When we come in we are sitting in the car de-briefing and he hands me his student card for feedback and I look at the name and do a double take after we finally take off our helmets and we realize we know each other.

Seems like there were quite a few spare trailer tyres needed. John Sullivan and I know of at least one other who needed their spare. Mark was beat when he showed at the track eventually, gave his student to someone else. Thanks to Peter for the heads up, gave Bob and I a bit more time to cause less confusion!

John's weekend - Fail. Routine maintenance on my daughter's 04 Beetle. Oil change, snapped bolt on the shroud. Car been up north and PO didnt do much maitenance given it only has 44k miles. Spill some oil due to bad filter placement unless you have the hands of a 10 y/o. Next up rotate tires and new front pads. Hit passenger side and with some effort remove lugs that had more than 150 lb of tightening torque. Driver's side, well need 18 inch extension to free up frozen lugs. Last one gets rounded over....sheesh. So I consider options and get out the twist socket set. I figured drilling that sucker would be hours. I affixed the appropriate size, attached 1/2 driver Crapsman breaker bar (why use higher quality) and 18 inch pipe. Next apply pressure and snap!! break head of rathcet off inside twist socket.

Spend the next three hours removing stuck socket and drilling out lug. That was Saturday. Sunday changed and cleaned the filter on turbo where I found split CV boot.....wth. Weather was beautiful tho.

But there was no lockup (can't be with ABS), and as a result, his tires maintained forward motion, and he veered left. A quick lock up would have straightened his trajectory, and might have resulted in a different result. Am I crazy?

The GT3 driver had a helmet on. Looks to me like he was a little too hot coming out of the turn and tried to pinch it, letting the rear end come out, catch, and shoot him across the track. It doesn't look like he tried to correct at all either before the first hit or between the first and second. With ABS, that might have helped.

Thanks Bob, one good thing is that all the parts tend to fly away from you.
Landing in that confined space was hopefully necessary. Wires are extremely difficult to judge distance from, I know I used to spray under them regularly, only one I ever hit was due to sun and against a dark background, never knew it was there till the rotor blades cut it! Looks like his seat back collapsed as well. With a 34 ft diameter rotor, I could space less than 4 inches each side.

Maybe it is me but I don't see any brake lights at all.

He dropped a wheel while loaded on the right side and that sent him to the left guardrail. Kind of how people at Summit T3 drop a wheel off on the right and end up shoot hard left into the tirewall.

I would say the GT3 was on a ride once the wheel dropped. I was surprised to not see brake lights as he headed left into the guardrail to reduce energy. The best would have been for him to hit left and stay there instead of bouncing back across the track to do even more damage in a harder hit.

It seems to me that the 2nd hit typically ends up doing considerable more damage/harm. Which is why we always stress to keep your foot on the brakes!

I don't see how a quick lock up would have straightened up his trajectory when the car is pointed left. If anything locking up the wheels ensures that the vehicle continues traveling in the direction it was headed. We teach this at BSR. Newton proved it for us so we don't have to on the internet.

This video suggests a problem I've never seen discussed in any detail. When the GT3 starts to lose it, he no doubt hammered the brakes. I don't see how a quick lock up would have straightened up his trajectory when the car is pointed left. If anything locking up the wheels ensures that the vehicle continues traveling in the direction it was headed. We teach this at BSR. Newton proved it for us so we don't have to on the internet.

Where you're pointed and where you're headed can differ! As a car rotates in a spin, the trajectory changes and that lags the heading. Lockup holds the heading and could change the outcome.

Absolutely correct, when you lockup the wheels you hold the trajectory. The only problem is that he is "headed" into the wall which is my point. :)

And how exactly do you lockup the wheels on a GT3?

pjalexandre

You don't but that is another point. :)

roundel

When the GT3 starts to lose it, he no doubt hammered the brakes. But there was no lockup (can't be with ABS), and as a result, his tires maintained forward motion, and he veered left. A quick lock up would have straightened his trajectory, and might have resulted in a different result. Am I crazy?

PS, if the guy was going to stop to help he should have gone past the wreck.

You don't but that is another point. :)

Seems that was exactly the original point. :?

pjalexandre
11-23-2011, 02:46 PM
Which point because now my head hurts.

We know that you cannot lock up the brakes on a GT3.

We know that a car that is in a spin and you can lock up the brakes will for the most part hold the trajectory that it had once the wheels lock.

The car in the video dropped a wheel, pitched and was headed for the left guardrail, if it could have locked up the brakes it still would have hit the left guardrail and not magically straightened out.... That is my friggin point ABS or not nothing was saving that one. All he could have done was prevent the 2ndary hit on the right side and that is debatable since none of us was there. :bang:

Seems that was exactly the original point. :?

perhaps you can't lock them but you can get them to have less traction.

Carjack fail.

Two clueless carjackers foiled by stick shift

St. Petersburg Times

Two would-be carjacking victims still have their car after their assailants were thwarted by an unlikely ally: The car's stick shift.
Police said a 45-year-old man was dropping off a work truck in St. Petersburg. just before 1 a.m.
His 23-year-old girlfriend came to pick him up in her 2007 Nissan, which has a manual transmission.
She stopped to let her boyfriend get out and lock up at the business' gate. As he returned to the car and the pair got ready to drive away, two men appeared on either side, police said.
One pulled out a handgun and told them to get out or they would shoot. The couple got out. The two men demanded money and a cellphone. They got a cell phone, but apparently no money, police said.
The men then jumped into the vehicle and started it up, but that's where they were foiled. They couldn't drive stick.
Police said the two men gave up and ran.

Yes, the Prius [AKA Dr. K] is being blamed in the latest report on Jalopnik. It seems like Dr. K does everything wrong, even in Japan. ;) Soon we will be reading how he caused the Fukashima nuclear disaster.
