C'mon folks. Lets not pollute Dorki with politics. That's what Rennlist is for! :p

OTOH, this thread is getting rather large. political discussions will surely close/lock it...

then it'd be time for a new fail thread. :)

An SUV, a vibrator, and a bottle of vodka??

Remember the ridiculous Dartz Prombron? That oversized Russian luxury SUV that offered customers such outlandish options as whale penis trim for its seats? Now the company behind it has released another model, this one going by the name of Iron.Diamond or L4P Ladies Only.

The strange name, as you’d have probably guessed, is due to the vehicle being targeted at women.

It gets a slightly shorter wheelbase than the previous model, as well as a high-end camera system to aid parking and two-tone interior. Customers can also choose from a number of trim materials including snake, crocodile or elephant skins, though there doesn’t appear to be any whale penis this time.

This by no means makes the Iron.Diamond soft in anyway.

It still gets a 999 horsepower powerplant under the hood, as well as a special monocoque body built using techniques used by the former Soviet military for its armored vehicles.

Production is limited to just 10 units worldwide and it appears that the first unit has already been sold to Princess Regina Abdurazakova from Kazakhstan.

No word on pricing but the vehicle is being offered for free, along with a designer vibrator from the Viktor Poontoos collection, for anyone buying a bottle of RussoBaltique vodka.

This particular bottle of Vodka comes in a 20 pound case made of solid gold and lists for around 500,000 euros ($740,000).

If you ever wanted an example of where money really can’t buy taste, trying giving the guys at Dartz a call.

I have been mountain biking for years and these "downhill" bikes have suspensions similiar to moto-dirt bikes; 6-7-8+ inches of travel.

Still, what these guys do is crazy. We have done Whitetail in the summer and that can be scary.

Just like with people that to fat to get out of bed... both require others even more bizarre than themselves to support their behavior (misbehavior??).

most of those don't look too safe or effective. wouldn't be surprised if vice grip could improve on the design and build something that would actually handle well and finish; would probably make sense to have a proper cage and harnesses as well. put some weight into it to knock the other idiots out of the way.

It's more intense then doing 4 hours at Summit Point on street tires in the rain.

That is effing awesome and takes me back to my youth when we had our own backyard version of this: take, make, cobble together anything with wheels, including tricycles, pedal cars, wagons and furniture (yes, furniture) and run it down Parmadale Hill, one half mile long, steep with an S curve in the middle. If you started at the top, you were likely traveling too fast to make it past the S curve, if you did, you had to voluntarily crash before reaching the end and shooting out into traffic on Ridgewood Drive. Looking fondly now at the still visible scars on my body, I realize now this was the genesis of all my motorsports madness.

Absolutely. The state of the art where I grew up was wooden frame with ball bearing wheels. We'd go to all kinds of lengths to get those old used bearings to sing, and top speeds were serious. Same deal as Frank explained - if you needed to stop in any kind of hurry, bailing out was the only option and some injury was just part of the deal. Some [nameless, OK?] tried to time the run on a crossroad to pass under larger trucks. We did it as a matter of course until the inevitable happened and someone checked up at the last minute and clipped the rear wheel of the truck. Destroyed his kart, but he was just scraped up a bit more than usual.

What worries me is all the coverage is about the dangers of speed - and that the safety police are going to try and use this as an excuse to lower the speed limit to 55 again. This had nothing to do with speed - it had to do with poor judgment, alcohol abuse, and general lack of skill.

FWIW, rod bolts are under less stress in a turbo motor @ the same rev limit.

My feeble mind is confused by this. How can the rod bolts in a turbo be under less stress than n/a? Is it because turbo has lower CR and therefore shorter stroke / slower piston speed?? :?

I'm gonno make a WAG, just for the sake of guessing.....

I believe the only time the bolts are under any stress is during the intake stroke, when another piston is under power and the crank is "dragging" the piston down during the intake stroke. In an NA, vacuum of the piston dropping is the only thing sucking in the air/fuel mix. So the bolts are straining somewhat depending upon how much vacuum is being generated based upon the intake track. Whereas in a forced air motor (turbo or SC), the air is under pressure, which presumably even helps push the piston down, which is then putting stress on top of the journal, rather than from underneath.

During the other 3 strokes of the piston, the power stroke is putting pressure on top, compression stroke is putting pressure on top, and the exhaust stroke is putting pressure on top. Only on the intake stroke are the rod bolts potentially being stressed.

Cliff Claven
06-30-2011, 10:30 AM
why wouldn't they be under stress during the exhaust stroke as the piston whips up and gets snapped back down in the reverse direction?

HoodPin
06-30-2011, 10:37 AM
why wouldn't they be under stress during the exhaust stroke as the piston whips up and gets snapped back down in the reverse direction?

I suppose there's probably some stress during the direction change. But at the bottom of the power stroke, another piston should be starting its power stroke, further rotating the crank. The first piston is then pushed upwards via the crank to execute the exhaust stroke. So most of the stress is now between the journal and the top side of the connecting rod bearing. When the exhaust stroke is completed, yet another piston is firing, which rotates the crank further, drawing the first piston down for an intake stroke. Ignoring stress on the bolts during a direction change, it seems to be that the is the only stroke where the crank is "pulling" on the piston, effectively putting stress on the bolts via the bottom of the connecting rod bearing/journal.

But you make a good point; I don't know whether the direction changes represent a significant impact/stress on the rod bolts.

smdubovsky

Dont worry about the other pstons. The flywheel makes the crank rotate smoothly enough. A rod is under compression when the piston reaches ~1/2 its stroke down until about 1/2 a stroke up (the crank journal is perfectly at the top or bottom ina horiz porsche engine.) It is decelerating the piston to a stop and reaccelerating it. The rod is then in tension from ~1/2 way up until ~1/2 way back down. Again decellerating it, then reaccelerating just in the opposite direction this time. This happens on both strokes of a 4-stroke. Peak piston velocity is @ 1/2 stroke (up or down) and only then is the rod force zero.

If you look at the mass of a piston+rod @ 8000+rpm vs the vacuum of sucking in more air in mostly inconsequential. The power from an power stroke explosion is NOT. A turbo w/ more pressure after ignition reduces peak rod tensile forces @ TDC. Rod bolts only care about tensile forces as they aren't doing any work when the rods in compression. So, the more power you make (which turbos can do in spades) the more external forces there are helping de/accelerate the piston over TDC which reduces rod tensile forces.

Note: I can't claim to have figured this out on my own. It *IS* counter intuitive. Corky Bells(?) turbocharging book has some great piston/rod force graphs that make you smack your forehead and think "well, duh! Thats obvious AFTER you explained it to me"

Edit: Someones borrowed my book. I'll get it back this weekend and scan the graphs.

The 3.2 and 3.3 engines use the same rod/rod bolts. Rod bolt failures were commonly known in some early 3.2 engines that suffered over-rev causing the rod bolts to stretch.

Also if I'm not mistaken, the mechanical loading that the rod bolts are holding against would be the inertia of the piston on its upward stroke x piston mass, thus the only thing affecting this load would be that piston mass coupled with engine speed. Add to this the velocity of which a modified Turbo can increase this engine speed, and you have the potential to cause rod bolt failure.

I guess what we don't know is if his rod bolts were new or reused, and if there was a baseline measurement taken or used for comparison sake during his build. There is of course the possibility of the bolts being over-torqued and stretched.

Some states it is. Back in the 80s in NC, at Wrightsville Beach, the cops would write tickets for that when people would step out of their car barefooted or wearing flip-flops.

Note the discussion page. Police can still cite someone for "unsafe driving" based on their opinion in many places but who knows if t would stand up in court.

Plus if you are from out of town you have to come back to fight it! m Most just paid I bet. Same thing at NJ beaches in the '60s and '70s. Lots of bogus tickets for all kinds of stuff and many more. Want to fight it... come back in 3 weeks on a Thursday for court.

The idea that the establishment has just discovered “ticket revenue” is absurd as politicians trying to lay the blame the other party (either side) for anything!!!

BMW has and Mercedes have Xenon , Porsche has Litronic, and you wanted your car to have High Intensity Discharge (HID) lighting like all the new cars from Europe too.

* The conversion kits were pretty expensive..
* Buying them used wasn't cheap either
* Blue bulbs required too much work to install

So you bought the new kit from ACME...

Rowan Atkinson crashes McLaren F1 supercar into tree

Actor Rowan Atkinson was hurt when he crashed his McLaren F1 supercar into a tree in Cambridgeshire.

The Blackadder and Mr Bean star suffered a shoulder injury in the accident, near Peterborough.

He is said to have walked from the car, which caught fire, after the crash on the A605 at Haddon on Thursday evening and waited for an ambulance.

Atkinson, 56, was admitted to Peterborough City Hospital and discharged on Friday afternoon.

A spokeswoman for Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Crews brought the fire under control by 8.13pm. They made the vehicle safe and used one hose reel to put out the fire.
