Default Fun Run Tips

I was going to send this one to Dan M. since he's the man for tomorrow but I thought I'd just post it in case anyone else wants to use it as a reference:

Here are some of the things I learned from leading the first 4 NoVa Fun Runs (in no particular order):

1) Route planning is key so map it out and drive it at least once. Pay close attention to landmarks which can be used as a part of the directions and chart the mileage so you can accurately estimate driving time.

2) Try to limit traffic light intersections and having to make a left across major roads when picking the route. Those two things are killers when trying to keep everyone together.

3) Avoid gravel. While it might not bother you on the point everyone behind you will naturally slow down and space out to avoid flying rocks. All that will do is stretch the pack out even more.

4) Make copies of the route on a map to hand out for all participants just in case anyone gets off track. You don't want to lose anybody

5) Keep the pace under control because you can never discount the "whip saw" effect. Just remember that by the time you are up to speed and pulling away the last guy won't even be on the throttle yet.

6) Try to designate someone to "push" from behind so the pack doesn't get too stretched out.

7) Try to maintain visual contact (via mirrors) with as many cars as possible. Obviously the more participants the harder that is.

8 ) Handheld radios are a must! Make sure everyone knows the channel to be used.

9) If using a mid-point break make sure there is enough parking available.

10) Don't worry about taking pictures while you are running point. There are plenty of people behind you who will have pictures to share.

11) Ask before leaving if anyone is peeling off while en-route so that way you won't be concerned when someone disappears.

12) Most importantly, have fun and be safe

If anything else pops into my mind I'll edit this post ...
