I sold my '01 996 w/ 93k miles a few months ago. The new owner decided to proactively have the IMS bearing replaced.

Turns out the original bearing looked perfect. Oil analyses had been fine while I owned the car.
Was the same experience for me and my '99 with 90k.

Mine was actually turning on the inside housing at 38k, it was tight otherwise.

I'll comment on my own failure... But it wasn't just one motor I am now on my 3rd failed M96 1 996 3.4L and 2 986 2.5L

None of my failures have had anything to do with IMS or D chunk or cracked head or slipped sleaves.

Each one came down to an oiling failure at the crank resulting in a thrown rod and usually a nice hole in the block.

This can only be a result of oil starvation/ low oil pressure.

Also, I think Michael J had one 986 2.7L go and two 3.4L go.

But suffice to say all motors suffered terminal failure.

1) My own (986S)
2) Carlos R. (996)
3) Paul A. (996)
4) Michael J. (986)
5) Ram N. (996)
6) John M. (986S)
7) I sold my spare motor to a shop in PA to replace their customer's blown engine

As I mentioned before, the list are of people involved in DE so (1) it's a remarkably high % of failure rate; (2) these are all very well maintained cars; but (3) these motors are all driven hard

Bad news, Paul. Maybe you should take the turns slower...
