Update to my previous post.

My RMS was dry but replaced with new style while in there, IMS bearings are perfect although the seal was seeping. They were replaced with LN bearings. Did clutch, throw out bearing and clutch master cylinder as it started weeping too.

Just thought I would share.

Got another one in the shop right now... Just pulled the IMS bearing- found the grease pushing past the seal, and uneven resistance when you spin the bearing.

This is on a '00 911 cab....

Good feedback. How similar/different is the IMS from a 3.6 996 to a 3.6 in a 997.1?

very true. probably a business opportunity here. like a dog walker, but for porsches. someone who will come over and drive your porsches when you're too busy. i know i probably need someone like that. my 996 has been at the airport for a week-and-a-half now. i rent a spot there because it's there so much. my other one is parked up in NH, just sitting there for two-and-a-half weeks doing nothing. not to mention the one that's been sitting in a garage somewhere in rural VA for who knows how long. and the other one on a lift with no motor in it for two-and-a-half years now. and the poor dually pickup, nothing to tow, no place to go. and i'm driving around in rental cars, different cities, different airports. and for what? so i can have all these cars that nobody drives? best to sell em all and head for the hills. well, maybe keep the carrera 3 liter

Just had my IMS replaced at 62k miles with the upgrade LN varient. Old bearing seal was intact with no signs of damage or wear on the bearings.

I can't remember if he mentioned anything about the IMS bearing, but either way, it seems clear that these cars should not sit for long periods - they're meant to be driven.
Good thing I'm putting 500 miles a week on mine....

Just as another data point.

I sold my '01 996 w/ 93k miles a few months ago. The new owner decided to proactively have the IMS bearing replaced.

Turns out the original bearing looked perfect. Oil analyses had been fine while I owned the car.

Thanks. I need to get another 4 years out of mine. I recently read from the Class Action suit that 4 to 8 percent were affected. From the internet, you'd think it was 1 out of 2.. Sword of Damocles hanging over my head... Seeing the cab on craigslist with 232K miles gives me hope though.... (touching wood now...)

Nothing to add... this one stands on its own.

As far back as I have been hearing about the IMS issue, the estimated amount of affected engines has been given as ~5%.
