Default Installed H4's this afternoon - Uuugh!

I couldn't believe how much of a pain it was to install H4's on the 73E. The lip on the fenders that the H4's had to mount into was not well formed, and the lip was different between the two fenders. It took a lot of patience (or cussing) but they're done. I still need to put in relays to keep my hi/lo beam switch from frying. Maybe next weekend's project...

Hey Jim

Dont tell me this, My new h4s for the 912 are on the way. Just have to wait and see. Not everything is cut and dry for the 30 year old cars, are they

Hi Brett! Long time since we talked. As far as the H4 installation goes...I'm just glad that one's behind me. I think it's probably different for each car. I think Rick Lee and Bill (BW911) had a much easier time with their H4 installations. Or maybe it's just me!

Instead of having a problem with the lip, I got added pleasure of having to rig up a custom plug assembly, as the H5's I had were not at all compatible with the H4's. Not a tough job, but not a 5 minute job either. Still, I think the H4's are the best upgrade I've done. Love 'em!

I still need to adjust the H4's so they point where they should. Is there a good procedure for this or does everyone just wing it? Thanks!

Amazingly, mine were set up just right when I installed them. I think you need to go to the back of some shopping center parking lot. You know, where all the dumpsters are. At night, make sure you're on a flat surface and shine 'em on the brick wall ahead. I think you need to be 25 ft' from the wall. Adjust them slightly to the right, so they don't blind oncoming traffic.

Jim, it's just you.

No, they are a bit tricky to get in. I didn't have the problem you described, but like RL I had to rewire the connections. Aiming can take a while. Get them pointed to the right, probably more than you think, particularly the driver's side light. They were a pretty dramatic improvement for me, particularly on the high beams. You'll be glad you did it. You'll need it if you're running point in the predawn run to Hershey.

Thanks Bill. I'll try to align them as you and Rick Lee suggested. I need to get some relays installed before light up the high beams. Don't want to fry my feeble 30-year old wiring.

Lu and I are going to Hershey on Friday (4/25) after work. We want to be fresh and ready to spend our money first thing Saturday AM. Come to think of it, I need to check with the "appropriations committee" to find out what my budget is.

And when the officers approach to arrest you for attempted b&e, make sure you drop all tools and keep your hands where they can see them. Wouldn't want them to mistake a screwdriver for a gun.

When I put mine in, 101 Projects or Bentley's or Haynes described the procedure for adjusting, similar to what Richard describes, without the danger of arrest. I just used my garage wall, being a rich white guy.
