I can't see the photo and I'm no expert, but you must weight the value of going in there again. I find it hard to believe that your car would have the original clutch from 30 years ago. I don't know if Noah was funnin ya, but any wear part like that I would replace.

I don't know the specific parts for a 71 since it's different than my SC, but I replaced:

disk
pressure plate and TO bearing
resurfaced flywheel and new bolts
new pressure plate bolts
clutch fork and related rubber bushings.
I think there may have been a couple of other little bits in there....

i found a bargain on clutch discs that i'll share. you need to insure the application is for your car:

i was searching for a clutch system for a 914 and found parts at bus depot
(busdepot.com) listing sachs parts for cheap. a sachs clutch disk is going for $40 (215mm, 6-spring disc)

The bus depot should be a great resource for your 914 and thay do sell Porsche parts at a better discount than most. I wish I knew 914 trannys like I do the 901 but it may be the same. Lets get a real expert in here. Anyone?? BTW I'm with Steve on the replacement stuff. Do all the wear items unless you like dropping on a regular basis. The pilot bearing should be checked as well.

Hey Brian,
Its a no-brainer to refresh the clutch now that you have it open, especially if you can get parts at the kind of prices that busdepot seems to be offering!

THings to do:
disk
pressure plate and TO bearing
pilot bearing
resurface flywheel and new bolts
new pressure plate bolts
clutch fork and related rubber bushings.

The disk, pressure plate, and TO bearing are the higher dollar items. Shop smart for those. Most of the rest are relatively inexpensive. Make sure you torque everything carefully when reassembling. Anything that comes loose from this assembly will turn the bell housing into a mechanical Maytag. Don't ask me how I know this.

My 914 came stock (as did all 914s) with the 901 tranny. Think the R&P are flipped but all the same internals.

Does it say ’71 or is for a ’71? I believe 911s had several size increases for disks and one flywheel change before switching over to the 915 trans. The disk size depends on the flywheel. Though ‘71s had a different release mechanism I think the “disk” is the same as long as the flywheel is the same. 914s used 901 transmissions but the 4 cylinder cars probably used a different flywheel disk combination.

What everyone else said about replacing the disk, at a minimum replace it, the pilot bearing and have the flywheel resurfaced.
