With the grandparents in town for the weekend to watch the kids, my wife and I decided to head out for a drive this morning. Somehow along the way we discovered the joys of MD driving.
Starting out we headed North on 15 out out of Leesburg, crossed the Potomac and made a right onto RT28E. We ran that until it teed into RT85 and then ran that North to Frederick. After a quick break in Frederick we headed South on New Design Road back down to RT 28 and than backtracked to 15N. The first major intersection is RT 464 and we headed West on that, crossed RT 17 and then headed South on RT 340 into Harpers Ferry. From there we ran some of my favorite VA roads back home. Total driving distance was just under 150 miles and we were having so much fun we lost all track of time. Let me first give credit to Keith for suggesting that area of MD in his post from last week. Secondly, let me say there are TONS of untapped roads up there with no traffic so it might just have to become our new stomping grounds for next year 28 and 85 are both real nice roads with plenty of twists and straights. 464 is wild ... the hills on that road reminded me of some of the best roller coasters I've ever ridden. I am definately going to find my way back up there again soon and discover some more new roads ...

I take that route many mornings on my way from Lovettsville. You can get a pretty good head of steam going on 85 before you hit Buckeystown.....but the deer and tractors are everywhere. The roads South of frederick and West to Harpers Ferry are full of wonderful roads with lots of twists and turns. If you happen to see a trooper, they are typically driving 15-20 mph faster than the posted speed limit (like most of MD).

MD has some great back roads with nice curves. Another route is to take route 28 up through Poolesvile, and then cut across to Frederick. An added benefit of driving in MD is that even if you get pulled over and get a wreckless for going 25 miles over the speed limit, you don't have to worry about jailtime or losing your license for 6 months like in VA. At the most, it will be a fat fine with some points.

Chris, name the time and place and we can map some nice routes out. Jim, leave the passport at home, bring the pabst. Unfortunately you can't get beer at gas stations in MD

There are some great roads in Upper Montgomery and Howard County. That would be great to have the crew on this side of the border.
