My neighbor stopped by the other day and asked if I wanted to buy his 74 Silver Coupe 2.7 that's been seeping oil onto his garage floor for five years now since moving from Califonia to VA. He drove it regularly (he says daily) in Cal, but has driven it only a dozen times here in VA.
Car has 80k original miles, 1-owner California car, Several oil leaks - extent of which have not been investigated, absolutely no rust, Interior pretty much hammered by the Cal sun. HAve not driven the car to know what else might be lurking in there. Any idea what it might be worth, he said to make him an offer? Is the 2.7 a candidate for removal and re-build with any sort of reliability, or would it be better recommened to drop in a 3.0 or 3.2? Not sure I'm going to buy it, just playing with the idea if anyone else might be interested in the car, let me know. Keith

If that 2.7 has not yet been touched, then it's a matter of when, not if. I think those require time certs or case savers. It ain't cheap. He could give you that car for free and you could easily spend $10k getting it up to snuff. If EVERYTHING else check out, I'd still budget for an engine rebuild or swap. But they are cool cars and I'd love to have one if I had the space.

I think you really need another Pcar Keith
Rick definitely hit the nail on the head, the car will eventually need an engine rebuild sooner rather than later. I just happen to have a 3.0 engine core that I've been looking for an excuse to build a good 3.0 or 3.2 with.... Maybe he will take $4k for it? I would think he would be lucky to get $6k given it's sun baked interior, and no rebuild. You could take some time to find an engine to transplant rather than a rebuild which would easily cost $5k just in parts and machine work. -Dan |

Keith:
My thoughts for what their worth (0.2 cents) My '76 Targa has 163,xxx miles on the 2.7 and it was "done" (time certs, head studs, valve stems, reseal case, etc... back around 60,xxx miles [many, MANY moons ago]. Car doesn't smoke and has very few leaks (oil return tubes are the culprit I think). Once I went through CIS several yers ago it has been reliable as a rock. Albeit...not a very fast rock. These much maligned middle year 911s are good cars ['76 on with galvanized bodies] and can always receive a transplant 3.0 or 3.2 in the future. My reserve plan is from the remains of a '74 targa I picked up that had a CIS 2.7 with euro P&C, 964 grind cams, etc... Bonus is that they really are easy to work on. Jason P.S. One can NEVER have enough P-cars. |

Besides, I've always had a sweet spot for 'pre-impacts' anyways, and the next will probably be one of those (when and if) like a nice '69S or 70S.

My car is running good. It doesn't much like the humid days (still has carbs) and has a few oil leaks that need to be addressed. I've been running it as much as I can and she is REALLY dirty. Will take some serious cleaning for the 8/16 Cruise-in.
