We ran against a couple F5000 cars at Pocono once. At the start they all ran away from the rest of us, but none of them made it to the finish.
It's sort of cool to look at those cars and say, hey I beat that!

I certainly would not run a $100K car in the rain because I could not afford to replace it. I have won races in the rain and I've also had my one and only car to car contact in the rain. Sad part is that I knew the contact was going to happen before it did because I let my testosterone level dictate that I had to beat a guy into T3 at Summit. Going too fast for conditions and soon as I hit the sealer at the apex and rolled on the gas, around I went and my right quater panel hit the guy next to me left front. I learned a whole bunch that day about keeping emotions in check.

Yes it was. Extremely slick conditions. But rain driving is also a great teaching tool for car control. This was my kid's second weekend on track and he passed the comp school. I was a nervous wreck everytime I watched him go thru T9 sideways.

Steve, how did Robbie enjoy his first official SCCA race in ITS? Lap times where he wanted them? My uncle, Mark Gibson, also runs in that class (Drives a pumpkin colored Datsun 240Z, #13). I wasn't out there this weekend but conditions were pretty nice.

Sorry I didn't realize he was there - I watched the ITS race (friend running SM5--same run group) yesterday afternoon, and I frankly didn't notice a 944. Hope he had a great weekend. Sure was nice weather!

Dr. K, I believe the ITR race was in the afternoon and the MX-5 guys (Obadia, Jacobs, Jackson, etc...) are in that race as well. The ITS race ran in the morning tho' some cars may run both classes. I think Robbie would have run the 944 before lunch, around 9:45am or so.

Ah. I didn't get there until about 11:30. There were ITS cars in that afternoon race. Interestingly, I know Obadia (know his parents and found him 18 months ago when I first looked into SSM - coincidence), and I believe I sat in Jacobs car (Miata set up by Piper, and felt like an Escalade inside - huge amount of space). Very friendly bunch of folks at SCCA, and interestingly they paddock very much by car class, so people really get to know those with whom they're driving.

Robbie finished mid pack and kept his nose clean. He was about 3 seconds off the leaders but did a great job for his first race weekend. I'll let the proud Pappa give the details after the valium wears off .

Don't know Obadia personally but do know that he's a terrific wheel man. Jacobs is good too. Interesting class (MX-5 locally) - hope it picks up steam. Agree that SSM is the way to go for now. Did you end up picking-up an SSM?

Not yet, but will rent one at my next SP event. Probably do a day in the 911 and a day (or two) in the SSM. I found one I'd consider buying but probably won't still be available by the time I'm ready to pull the trigger.

Rob did very well for his rookie race this weekend. He only had one miscue when he came into T5 a bit too hot and went wide putting two off. He finished 9th overall on Saturday and 8th overall on Sunday. Goal was to keep himself out of trouble and not get run over. He accomplished both with a car that needs just a little more development to be competitive. He was in the lower third of the ITS field and off the leaders by about 2-3 seconds. Fast guys were in the 27's and he was at 30. A custom tune and a new set of Hoho's will get him where he needs to be. I ran the car with the same year old RA1's at the DE last week and could manage a couple of 29's. Watching his videos reveals that he has the newbie turn in too early syndrome. Once we get that out of his system lap times will get better.

And yes, it was stressful watching the kid that I have dragged to the track since he was 6 years old and shaking down DE participants for a dollar to clean their windshield to now being on the radio and watching him go thru T9 full throttle drifting to the left edge of the pavement just a couple of inches from disaster but pulling it off lap after lap. Geez I'm gettin' old.
