I've heard of a few people losing their roof racks. 4 wheels/tires up on the roof creates a lot of wind resistance...likely more than anything else you'd typically put up there.
It sounds like Dave Riley has the sweet setup. That'd be my choice if I didn't have a trailer + puller already.
