Parking/hand brakes typically don't work all that well in reverse, so by leaving it on (not to tight) he's getting a "hill holder" kind of action out of it - he can back up against the brake but not roll forward easily.

Smile Thanks for all the tips - Oil change done.

Howdy,

Thank you for all the tips and humor. I was able to change the oil over the weekend. Bought 10 qt (put 9, after measuring the level twice) porsche approved for $66 on sale, OEM filter from Pelican and new crush washer. It tool me about hour and fifteen minutes, most of the time spent was to let the oil drain.

Also, gear oil was changed by a Indie shop 4K miles ago with Mobil 1 and it is causing gear shifting problems in reverse and 2nd gear when the car is cold. Once the car warms up the the transmission shifts fine. Based on my reading it seems like the OEM grear oil has some special formulation and people who used different gear oils had same problem and it went away once they put the OEM oil. So that's the next project.

Thanks again.

Jay

Well done! The gear oil change won't take as long as there is less to drain. Too bad on the 4K oil but the upside is it won't smell as peculiar as old gear oil. Miller makes an excellent gear oil for our cars with a very convenient long snout extension on the quart size you can refill from the large size for reaching the filler hole. Let car cool as you will be reaching up by the exhaust. Pelican article is good for this as well. Pick up the Bentley book for Boxsters if you want even more , and correct, info for your DIYs.

Mobil Delvac is about the best choice of gear oil for our transaxles. It's kinda hard to find in smaller-than-industrial sizes, but you can get it in 1-gal jugs at Suncoast and Luftechnik. IIRC, 986 and 987 trannies take just under 3 quarts, so you'll only need 1 jug.

Excellent. It warms my heart everytime someone tackles a diy.

First an oil change, then gear lube swap, and soon enough you'll be replacing clutches and swapping motors with the best (worst) of them.

My first domino was changing my brake pads (swapping out track vs street on a mostly-street car). I had been paying $140 for this, and when I realized I could do all 4 wheels with a jack, hammer, pin and large pliers in well under an hour... Then the Dorki who was to help with my suspension rebuild had a serious family health issue and I had to do it with less help (but certainly not with zero help, thanks especially to Bill Miller and OldTee and, or course, Ben). Next think I knew...this
