Hahaha I hadn't thought of it that way! Sorry, should've cropped the photo. It's my class ring from grad school. It's a beaver holding a scroll with some other impossible-to-see stuff going on in the background. Also enscribed are the letters "IHTFP"...kudos if you know what this means.

Methinks Dr. K knows what's goin' on.

As the rubber ages, it gets harder and more brittle, thus prone to cracking. The crack is now becoming a potential "break away" point for some tread to chuck off, particularly if you're forced into an off-pavement excursion, and catch the pavement/curbing edge just right. Plus I believe that crack is deep enough that moisture is now able to get into the cords, and the steel belts can begin rusting, leading to further delamination under the tread.

IMHO, better safe than sorry. Would be a pain for a $200 tire to cause you to miss part of a DE weekend or damage the car due to luck not stretching out as long as you'd hoped.

Yeah, you're right. Tony, well said -- always good to put things into perspective. So sad. I did get a good run out of 'em -- they're about 8yrs old (*sniff* they grow up so fast!). At that age, they hardly wear! I had been hoping to cord them but 'tis quite difficult.

What size is it? I have some mostly-used-up RA-1s in my garage that probably match the rest of your tires. PM me if it's 225/16 or 245/16. cheap or free depending on tread.

Oh reeeeaallllyyyyy. That's perfect size for me: my Victo's are 225/50/16 and 245/45/16. Please tell me your RA-1's are as well! I just want other tires so that I don't have to use up my street tires...I couldn't care less how sticky they are. I shall send you a PM.

Thanks for all the input. I'll be retiring them.

Most of the folks that hang around here would say that tire is done. Water can get into the steel belting and cause it to fail.
Yeah that also had been occurring to me. I'm not seeing cords (yet) but they're so damn old I might as well let them go.

I hadn't thought of that. I don't think one could do much due to the slice extending into the sidewall.

Gotta say... If someone DID make a ring showing a bear eating a naked woman... I'd buy it.

"IHTFP" - I hate this fucking place
1st saw this in Vietnam on latrine walls and other places in the '60s. Suspect it dates backs even further.

Saw it again at George Mason in the early ‘70s (just before it split with UVA). Prolly just some cookie cutter drone collegians trying to make some obscure point about the establishment and how they weren’t really a part of it

At one of the grad dorms there is a three-story sign with this on the side.
