Anybody know if the M8x45 brake caliper bolt can also be used as a CV bolt?

Stock CV bolts on my SC were M8x50 but the Lobro replacement axle units I bought call for the shorter M8x45 bolts (due to a change in the flange). Upon closer examination the part number for the M8x45 bolt which Lobro recommends is the same part number as the brake caliper bolt.

Only thing in the the back of my mind is if there are different properties of those bolts but then again an M8 bolt is an M8 bolt, correct?

Thoughts / opinions ?

Wow, doug, finished with the rebuild and looking for another challenge? I wouldnt think twice about using the bolt.

Chris - compared to the rebuild putting in two complete axle assemblies is a piece of cake

Two of my CV's were showing wear so at almost 100k miles I knew the other side wouldn't be far behind and with lots of track days coming up this year I figured now was as good as ever. The thought of taking apart, inspecting and then rebuilding all the CV's just wasn't appealing so for about an extra $125 in total I decided to go with the complete units.

I hear you about the bolts ... at this point I'm going to go with them.

Get this: the CV bolt is a 12.9 class bolt while the caliper bolt is an 8.8 class bolt. How's that for some trivia

Turns out McMaster-Carr has what I need in a 12.9 class standard bolt at the 45mm length with the correct pitch of 1.25mm. 3 guesses who my first call will be in the morning and the first 2 don't count

I was at Fischer's Hardware in Springfield this Sat. Those guys, I'm pretty sure, have every oddball metric, hex, 12 pt. star, doo-dad bolt we could ever need. I just wish I was able to take the stuff off my car and then into their store to match it. They are so helpful there. The teenage employee who was helping me looked at my hat (all that was on it was the Ruf logo) and asked if that was my Porsche he heard (not saw) pull into the lot. So we talked cars for few minutes and he helped me find the bolts, washers and nuts I needed to jury-rig mount my ballast resistors. A whopping $1.32 sale and he acted like I was buying a car from him. I love that store!

I keep hearing good things about Fischer's so maybe some Saturday I'll make it down there. For now, though, it's actually more cost effective for me to order on line and pay the $4 shipping instead of spending an hour plus in the car.

BTW, I'm impressed that a teenager took the time to actually help a customer

Doug, I bet their CV bolts cost less than 1/4 of any catalogue's price. I think they even have the 12 pt. 12mm flywheel bolts there for $.95. If you have a big order, it IS worth the time. Very helpful crew too and at least one kid there loves Porsches.

If they can beat less then $8 for 50 CV bolts then it just might have been worth a trip. McMaster-Carr sells a 50 pack of regular alloy steel 12.9 M8 bolts for $7.38 or a 50 pack of the same size but in blue-alloy steel (supposedly rust resistent) for $12.07.

I splurged and went with the blue alloy steel option

I love McMaster Carr.

BUT, it's good to have a local, oh shit I broke that bolt, place to get last minute items. I cant be the only one that gets a little trigger happy with the 1/2" impact sometimes.
