The one I used (forgot who I borrowed it from) was a $7 bike shop wrench. Worked like a charm.

Get the bike shop wrench. It's called a hub wrench. Save the gas $$$.

Oh, and enjoy yourself as you "simply unscrew" the old tie rods from the rack. (per Wayne Dempsey.)

Or if you prefer, you could first loosen the circular brass nuts that the old boots attach to, and which act as locknuts on the tie rods. Then you really could simply unscrew the tie rods.

I contacted most of the bike shops here in Richmond and didn't have any luck getting my hands on one. Does any one in NOVA/DC know of a bike shop I could contact to get one?

If all else fails, it looks like the closest one to you is in Charlottesville.

Rolando

Since you're going to be busting your nuts getting the old tie rods out anyway you may as well bust them all the way. Just use a 12" crescent wrench on the tie rod knuckle. It's just like Dan pointed out "simply unscrew". Have fun!!

Don't tell anyone but I use a big nasty ultra low tech "makes bite marks but so what it's headed for the trash can anyway" pipe wrench to break them loose with.
