Well, maybe not.
If you listen to the original recordings on the best gear on the planet, then listen to the recent recordings, the clarity and dynamic range of the recent material is obviously better. There's no magic about it. Both the amps and the recording gear have improved quite a bit in 30 years.

Take a listen to Beck's original tracks on Blow by Blow on your best hollow state rig, then play the Live at Ronnie Scotts' version of the same track back to back. Game over!

OH YEAH, I remember that album well. To some extent we availed ourselves of RT to fill our need for that bluesy, wah-wah guitar sound we lost when Hendrix passed.
