I'm as puzzled as anyone. I haven't seen any green flags, but I did see this online:

Article 40.13 of the Formula 1 sporting regulations states: "If the race ends while the safety car is deployed it will enter the pit lane at the end of the last lap and the cars will take the chequered flag as normal without overtaking."

Good pics make a good argument.

The same article where I found the reg referenced mentioned that Freddie was on the radio asking whether he could the same to Hammy, but was told NO. Seems to me the rules are clear, but the flaggers may have blown it. Otherwise the rules are written for better photo opps??? As to why the PC would be brought in, and not take the checkered flag.

Anyone else notice that the Ferrari in-car cam was re-angled so you don't see as much of the driver's hand anymore (as compared to shots from Spain). Although I don't think the F-duct is as much a factor in Monaco. Am I the only one that thinks F-duct is appropriately named?

I am wondering how anyone could think that, well lets see, the race is under sc, its the last lap, oh but in the last hundred feet the flags turn green so it isn't a finish under sc. MS has been in this game for how long? Even Benz knows better than to try and get out of this one. The rule is painfully clear. Oh, Michael, remind us again how parking at Rassgasse worked for ya?

Your point makes sense. But why then the green flags/lights. Other than for appearances, it doesn't make sense. If SC comes in but race is supposed to end in that order, then why not just leave out the yellow flags/lights? Even as you suggest the rules are clear, they must not be abundantly, because even Freddie raised the issue.

BINGO! The source of the pics I posted also shows the exact scenario you are describing from 2009 IIRC where the yellow flag and checker are flown to end the race. That is where the rules cited would really apply IMO. Green flagS means race means pass if you have a set.

Wemple, read up on the issue and you will learn that the majority of the teams thought they were to race to the line given the messages and flags from the FIA. The FIA screwed up but will not let FIAT loose the position. Hmmmm.

The rule is clear, but the flags were not. It does appear to be a green flag at the end. Logic suggests the teams were notified the SC was coming in, then the track was green per the flags/lights, the track was open for racing through the last corners. The notification was to prepare the teams for the run to the finish.

I think the stewards handled this poorly. They should have left the track yellow. It was an ambiguous situation at best.

+1. On track conditions, including flags/lights/corner workers at that instant should always take precedent. I also thought MS pulled a d!ck move, until I saw these pics on the web. I also think FA was thinking "hold station" to finish, or he never would have left the door open like that.

MS and Ross exploited a racing situation and I think they have a valid argument. The FIA & track officials screwed up by throwing a green, and now they are blaming MS.

You do have to love the fact that D. Hill was on the committee!!!
