Default What do "clattering", or chattering valves sound like?

Car is at mech's getting some TLC and the mech claims that the 'valves need adjusting'......H'mmm. I told him they were just done at 27K (car has just 29K now). Tomorrow I will go p/u the car. They will not be doing any valve adjustments....... In my prev tech sessions I don't recall ANYone commenting that my valves needed adjustment. Maybe just a ploy to charge me for 3 (more hrs) of labor...?

H'mmm.

Clattering is OK as it would indicate loose valves. But, I'm with Lane, your car has very low miles which would lend me to want to replace anything rubber, like gaskets and brake hoses and that you need to replace all the fluids and do a valve adj at least every other year. A valve adj is a great time to inspect the top end and never hurts (if done right). Also, 911 engine noises are something that one becomes atune to. You will get used to what is right and what isn't. Until then, you'll have to let someone else listen to it. No way anyone here can simply tell you what's up with you mentioning "clatter."

Air cooled, solid lifter engines sound much different than most other car engines. And evaluation should not be made until engine is at operating temp. Agree with having an experienced ear have a listen.

There's always a chance one or more valves wasn't adjusted to within spec when that work was done
