I actually ran it up to temp the night before, checked for leaks afterwards, then parked in the garage for the night. It was Saturday morning that the cap blew off immediately after I started the car up.

My question is: how did it NOT blow off Friday night after running it up to temp, yet, it blew immediately the next morning after sitting all night?

As Bob will tell you, I'm partially to blame for this mishap. You see I provided an old set of PF97s, which I had labeled as "M3". Trusting me, Bob waited until Wed/Thu night prior to this past weekend to open the box and have a look. OOPS! Wrong pads! Sorry about that!!! So Bob went out on some old stock pads and COMPLETELY TOASTED THEM!! Nice job! I'd say that's just beyond "getting your money's worth" out of those...

Actually old PF 97s pictured here. I then ordered pads when I realized I had the wrong ones from you, and requested that the seller bring them to the track since he was attending the event. He said, "Wouldn't your rather put them on at home. I'll ship them and they will be there tomorrow." They got here today, Monday. But the real meat head was me who decided to ignore logic. FWIW, the rotors fared amazingly well, I replaced the piston and had a fine Sunday with pads from Joel. The only real loss was I missed the BBQ while I went home to fetch my old calipers.

Just BTW, the rule of thumb for the track is you need as much pad as the thickness of the backing plate. I assume this holds true for BMWs, too. You need that to dissipate the heat from threshold and frequent braking (e.g. at the track). You should also be checking your pads (I assume the pad on the other side of the rotor was pretty worn, too?) at least daily and not driving on worn pads. Missing the BBQ is pretty minor compared to what could have happened...
