Friend of mine has a '71 914-4 with a 1.7, and I suspect a broken or bent valve. The car runs until it's reached operating temperature, then the valve sticks open .
Car has 57k original miles on it, and the case has never been cracked. Anyone have an idea what one would expect to pay to have the repair done professionally, is it a DYI job? He's trying to decide whether to sell or repair. Thanks for any help...know nothing about 914's... Keith

If that is all it is it should not be a big job. Have you looked at the spring?

He should probably call a shop to get an opinion on cause. ASG is listed as the shop with the most 914 experience in the area; 703-876-2811. Also, try 914club.com for informed and uninformed opinions on what might be happening.

consider a DIY job as it's not that bad to drop the engine (with trans attached) and get to the head. of course, you should do all you can to verify the prob before doing work that could later on be found to be unnecessary.
my estimate if DIY to be $350 based upon your analysis. there are alot of 914'er in the area itchin' to get dirty. maybe we could arrange a dorki engine drop! (something new and novel |

I would be more than happy to help drop as well. have done it many more times than i have wanted to.
Definitely find out what the problem is first. Do as Kurt suggested and take off the valve covers and inspect the springs. Before you drop it, head over to 914club.com and report the problem. They have some real 914 techies over there. If you dont get an answer right away, can give you some names/numbers to help diagnose the issue. Bill |

Appearance Package - (914-6 trim) Chrome Front and Rear Bumpers, Fog Lamps, Vinyl Trim, Pedrini cast-alloy wheels, wood interior accents, etc. Only non-original item on the car is a brushed aluminum instrument gauge from the 914-6 installed because it had a temperature gauge rather than the stock 914 idiot light. Known problems: Bent or Sticking Valve Snapped Pin on left rear trunk hinge. Whatdya all think it's worth? Keith

Well.. how are the rocker panels and the battery box? Trunk hinges are hard to find these days too. How about original pieces like the jack and passenger foot rest?
I'll give ya $500 (that's the 914club influence) :P I wouldn't get too excited.. it is a 1.7 however, I would think if it is as nice as described, $5-7k might be attainable.. Of course, CHERNER has a 1.8 for sale for about $10K.. and its been for sale for a while.
