Default quick question on valve adjustments

In addition to the feeler gauge, new gaskets, and maybe some
oil, what else is needed (in terms of parts) for a valve adjustment?

I hear a lot about leaks - do the valve cover nuts get replaced
each time the valve covers come off?

Anything else (parts wise)?

Buy the gasket kit that includes new nylock nuts and new washers and you should be set. A new sump gasket is nice for an SC as are new plugs if you yank them to turn the engine more easily.

Yup what Chris said, get one of these gasket sets. http://www.eurowebparts.com/default....he/default.htm
They come with the lock nuts, washers and gaskets. You'll also need a case of oil, oil filter, and the feeler guage. If you have all this stuff, then you're all set.

You don't have to dump your oil for this job. If you need to change it anyway, this is a good time to do it, but otherwise, you'll just need to top off .5-1 qt. when you're done. Make sure the car is stone cold when you do this.

I have heard wrapping the heat exchangers in tin foil makes clean up a breeze. I found this out after I did my 3 valve adjustments in February.

Thanks for the info. I ordered the parts set with the nuts, washers, and good gaskets, as well as oil crush washers.

Change your plugs while you're at it -- it makes turning the engine over by hand much easier. And plugs are cheap. Do you sump gasket, too.

And lubricate your muffler bearings, for chrissakes.

I just poseted this on another thread, so I'll put it here while the info is fresh - be careful when tightening done the nuts on the valve covers when done. Its not time to go Cro-Magnon on these things. Tighten them in a alternating pattern and to the proper specs to avoid warping the cover and getting leaks. I have the right spec torque wrench you can borrow if you need it.

FYI, I also have a new Carrera valve colver gasket set here at home if you want to do the adjust this weekend.

Good call Chris ! We all know of Emery's "iron death grip", if he's able to snap off lug nuts with his bare hands, who knows what he'll do to the valve cover hardware .
