We do not want a caretaker society where the government tells us what's safe and what's not safe, but stories like this make you wonder. A dad lost his son due to his own profound lack of judgment, and he may get time alone to think about it.

Seriously -- WTF can the legal system do that will make things any worse for this guy? I suspect he 'learned his lesson' way more then any jail time would teach him...

And others will read about it, and make sure they don't let their 8 year olds fire an uzi. No need for Gov't intervention.

Spot on comments. The father's realization that he just put his kid in a situation that caused him to shoot himself in the head has got to be one of the most painful feelings in the universe.

Not trying to start anything here... but I couldn't disagree with you guys more. I know the lefty view isn't too popular on this board, but just offering a different opinion as it isn't well represented here.

Hard to say if (or how much) events like this reduce the incidence of such disasters. Also hard to say if making it illegal would have an effect.

I'm pretty libertarian, and I always kind of liked that Maryland did not have a helmet rule for motorcycles until very recently. But I would never ride without a helmet, and I really do not want to see anyone's head mashed in an accident (or pay for their care afterward).

If you can fashion a law to govern stupid behavior without seriously impinging on freedom, then fine. Pass a law that nobody under 17 can handle an Uzi. Will it help? Well, it won't hurt much.
