I guess I have two questions....
When I bought the black car, I took out the stock pads and put in PF-97s. There were these little discs attached to the calipers. When I installed the PF-97s, I put the discs in with them, but one wouldn't stay put. I managed to get it to stay put after a number of attempts. Anyhow, are these just anti-squeal pads? Can I remove them? I find that the brakes on this car, unlike the last one, squeal like a bitch all the time when in motion, not just when on the brakes. I'm wondering if these things being somewhat loose in there are contributing to the effect. If that's not the squeaking problem, what could be causing that? Rear bearings are new, and fronts look OK (IIRC the failure of a front bearing is a groan?) Starting the winter list since my season's done.

We didn't bend a backing plate against the rotor did we?

I am assuming that the noise is comming from the front end, Jack up one wheel and spin the wheel, I don't remember if your car has backing plates in it but they are the stamped steel "shields" that are behind the rotor. it is fairly common to bend one and have it scrape the rotor, when that happens it squeals all the time. Find the wheel the noise is comming from and just go to it. Your "disc" may have also slipped and is rubbing against the hat of the rotor.

I'm not sure where it's coming from, but yes the backing plates are still on up front (I think they are gone in the rear). I always keep my car on the pavement so I don't think I could have bent one.
Are those discs something I can remove for good? I assumed they have something to do with reducing squealing, but for frequent/semi-annual pad swaps, they are a PITA.

Yank them, and make sure you didn't bend the backing plate when you put the brakes in. It does happen.

Squealing typically = vibration. (unless there is no pad left / not bedded properly).
Did you use anything like Sta-Lube synthetic caliper grease where the ears of the backing plate ride in the caliper? If it is a floating caliper ... lube the caliper guide pins? Anti-squeal paste on pad backing plate where caliper piston makes contact? IMO ...floating / semi-floating calipers squeal like a bitch unless you lube and paste them. Your backing plate is there mainly to keep the rotors dry in the rain (and road debris off) so that your first brake application [say when driving on the h-way for long periods] isn't a surprise lack of ... no brakes |

Thanks. These are the fancy "big turbo" brakes....the black ones. The have 4 pistons, so I don't think these are considered floating like the rest of my fleet. But no, I didn't pu anything on them like lube or grease. I guess I will when I put the street pads back in.

Also make sure all the pads are in correctly; that is, you didn't inadvertently put one in backwards (metal back against rotor). Please, please, please don't ask me how I know this...
