TD, you obviously don't have an agent you have a relationship with.
Nope, as an attorney, I would never fully trust the advice of someone working for my insurance company due to, among other things, potential conflicts of interest.

Don't get me wrong, I have thought about talking with you about insurance issues many times, and I am trust your ethics and intentions completely. But if I ever had to decide whether to make a major claim or not, I would likely consult an attorney who specializes in these issues and make up my mind before I raised it with you. Once I did raise it with you, I am sure you would be as helpful as you possibly could. Seriously, no insult intended.

This is not legal advice.

Oh snap! I just spit some wine.

I too set up my house and car insurance to cover only what I could not. Saved me a bunch of $ up front and I was able to create a good sized umbrella policy from the savings.

For what it's worth, I was just reading the new Panarama, and a company called WSIB is insuring DE events as per their advertisement. Web address is www.wsibinsurance.com They say if you have a group, they will design a plan for that also. Maybe worth a checkout. Too late for RedRS but others may be interested.
I use WSIB. Rates are far more reasonable than Laurel DE with lower deductible.

Hell, I won't ask Scott about insurance and he thinks I'm his friend!

Anyone send this to Landjet just in case he crosses the river?

I'm on the self-insured bandwagon regarding this issue. I am too concerned about compromising the on-road insurance coverage of our other cars. I used to have separate DE insurance on the Boxster and 944S2, but that company went out of business. I will definitely be contacting WSI (I found Laurel to be a bit expensive).

IMHO, the risks of DE, etc. are evident, and I'm willing to assume responsibility to participate (as well as obtaining supplemental insurance coverage as available). The only time I might consider some alternative recourse is if I honestly feel I was wronged by someone else's willful negligence.

But I'm curious if an "honest and open" claim to my insurance company could result in a claims investigation that might implicate other parties involved in the incident. Is it possible for the insurance company to sue another party? How ugly can this get?

With respect to having conversations with an insurance agent, alot depends on how the company is setup. We have State Farm coverage for our properties, and deal with a local agent, who I know I can to talk to about pretty much anything; he's willing to advise whether its prudent to go forward or not. But many companies, like GEICO, use a phone number that connects you to the next available agent, and pretty much every call is recorded; they are not conducive to one-on-one counseling.
