Actually made the rounds before... sterring wheel locks are deactivated by simply turning the ignition key to the "run" position

WTF would they even have the key off in the first place when they need to operate the steering (and maybe brakes)? Another Darwin award winner!

I'm thinking the steering column lock was not the problem. I think it was geometry and physics. The wheels lock after the driver turns to the extreme left. It could be that the tow car was pulling at such an angle that the front wheels were dragging sideways and they could not be steered back to straight. Once the angle of the cable to the front wheels got to 90 degrees (or similar) he was doomed.
