Default Backside Valve Adjustment

Anyone use the backside go/no go method? Downside?

Ordered a set of feelers and just want to make sure I can get them under the rockers. NooB at this and don't know what room is available to slide the feeler in until I get the covers off. Is there a particular length or style of gauge required?

Here's a pic. How did that gauge get in there?
