Has anyone had experience buy parts from Motor Miester? I'm thinking about rebuilding the trans in my '81 Targa. It needs 1st & 2nd syncros and probably dog gears. I saw what I need being sold on e-Bay by them. I plan to do the rebuild this winter. Any advice on where I can go the procedure? Thanks, Rich Lorenz

I've seen MotorMeister's name smeared around quite a bit...while I haven't done business with them, I'd seriously think about it before doing so. There are lots of unhappy people that have similar stories of being ripped off.

Rich . . . the information you seek can be found on the links below my name. For the most part most tranny parts all come from Porsche or Worldpack from Porshe, so buying syncros and dog teeth should be safe no matter where they come from.

Charlie S had a good experience with MM. I think most gripes are with there mechanical prowess, the parts should be ok.

If you need help with the tranny let me know.

Hint: go with the MB case sealant rather than the OE paper.

I did believe it or not. I won a set of new hydraulic tensioners from them off Ebay (cheaper than p.parts or other well known internet vendors). When I called to pay the piper, I thought I'd test the waters and see what other items I could get cheaper through MM. Well, I gave Roy the cheapest prices I found for some items and he was able to beat them all. I wound up buying a set of SSI's, Dansk Sport muffler, internal t-stat and a coupler of other small items. MM does so much engine/tranny rebuilding, I'm sure they get a decent bulk discount for these items. Find the cheapest prices and call MM to see if they can beat.....worked for me and my engine has not fallen apart.

.....just make sure when they arrive they are sealed in their original package and the gears still have teeth.

Man, I have heard nothing but bad with MM everywhere. Go on a few other sites and see what experiences people had. They do have a slick website but I wouldn't give them the time (or $$$) of day based on what I've read. It's my understanding that Excellence mag does not accept their advertising anymore based on the volume of complaints that they received.

There are Porsche factory parts, OEM suppliers that make those parts for Porsche but offer them to the public at a (no middle man) discount. Then there are the web parts brokers that offer "like OEM parts" from who knows where.

Make sure you know which you are paying for. Cheap prices sometime indicate cheap parts. Does saving $25.00 on a non-OEM hydraulic chain tensioners worth it? How about the gasket set that is OEM but is old and does not contain updated green Viton seals?

I found that EBS Racing is one of the best OEM suppliers and they also do engine service and machine work and have a excellent reputation plus they have a tech line where you can seek advice on parts or build. They will do additional discounts if you are doing a $$$ order. Ask for Jon

I've had first hand experience with MM.

Long [sad] story short>> back in 01 I removed the exhaust valve cover and discovered three broken head studs >> which meant major work... I called around the local area to get an estimate of engine rebuild>> and going price was $10k for top and bottom end [my 80 (11 had about 248K KM] ... MM had the ad in the Panorama >> rebuild for $~3700 or so >> talked with some local guys who had good experience with MM >> so decided to go with MM.

Removed the engine > shipped it to them>> then the diagnosis started coming in .. my pistons were not up to spec..needed new cylinders....cams needed repairing [had pits in them].. needed new heat exchangers... new valves, new cat, etc ... all totaled up it came to 10,626.... // the $3700 price is if all your parts are up to spec...

I can't honestly say I'm real happy with the rebuilt engine...Had a heck of a time getting it to run correctly when I reinstalled it.. [bad cold start valve]... had to replace ignition wires, plugs, rotor, cap...

If I had had the engine rebuilt locally - I could have camped out at the rebuild shop till it was running correctly > but when the rebuild shop is in California >> then it's sing-loi...

Roy did help out with parts.. offering several alternatives >>> but all in all I would not want to repeat the MM experience

Rich, maybe you and I should swoop in on Marc's place and have a 915 tranny party at his Garage & Grill.

BTW, I bought SSI heat exchangers from MM. They were new in the box and the price was the best I could find anywhere. I would buy parts from them again, as long as they are OEM or respected name brands. But, as you can see from my engine rebuilding thread, I wouldn't send them my engine to rebuild. Way too many bad stories for me to chance it, though some (one preson that I'm aware of) have had good results.
