Default What is it worth??

A friend of mine called me the other day and told me that he knew of a 911sc for sale cheap, so I had to go look at it.

What I know: It is a 1978 911sc with 98K miles on it, it has been sitting for about a year, the engine lost timing and there are a couple broken studs. The owner will take $2500 for the car, or sell the 3.0 motor alone for $500 I did not talk to the owner directly to see if there was any room with the prices. The body is in pretty rough shape and would require some body work and a paint job (color change), and the interior is awful, but the 3.0 motor could be built up into a 914 swap this winter

Is this a good deal or should I keep on looking?
~Eric

Eric:

Here is what I would want to know:

Lost timing because distributor removed and unable to reindex? Lost timing b/c tensioners / ramp failed and caused possible further damage? Lost timing b/c mechanical advance on distributor not working? Did Mr. Valve meet Mr. Piston?

Broken studs: Cylinder head? Exhaust? How many?

IMHO: I think if you are looking to get into a 2.7 or 3.0 for $500 +/- you are eventually looking at a complete rebuild [of at least the top end]. I have seen (and purschased) redone & tired CIS engines for close to half what he is asking.

You could always part out the rest of the car and try to recover your $2,500 (keeping what you want).

My $0.02

Jason

Like Jason mentioned, it really depends on the mechanical condition of the engine. 98K is really nothing for an SC. Just need to find out the extent of the 'damage' if there is any.

But if you ask me, a Brown SC Targa......Priceless

Hey Eric,

You will probably want to use something other than the CIS system in the 914. From what I've been told not many people have gotten them to fit without cutting out a portion of the rear trunk. I think it depends on the front engine mount you buy as well as how the mount is positioned, but you may want to search on PP about CIS issues in 914 conversions.

So if you are trying to tally the price for a 3.0, add some Webers/PMO's and subtract the value of a complete CIS system.

There must be $2500 worth of misc. parts on there that you can sell off on eBay. Maybe you'd better wait until Charlie is done with the engine stand.
