Old gasoline - ok to mix for DD?
I've got about a gallon of gas leftover from an old lawnmower. If I had to guess, it's at least two years old, but doesn't smell "off" to my untrained snout. I'm sure it's e10, nothing else has been available around here for years.
I can dispose of it (free) in a Fairfax County waste facility. But I'm wondering if I should just add it to the tank of my DD, a 4-cylinder Kia. The tank holds about 16 gallons, I'd imagine the one gallon of old gas probably wouldn't make much difference as it would mix with the fresh gas in the tank. Use it or dump it? |
I would use it in the mower before I put it in my car. Clogged filter, injector... if there are any issues.

Ask yourself if a $3 gallon of gas is worth taking a chance

1 gallon of gas... mixed in with 15 'new' gallions. Kia. Dump it in and just drive.

IMHO, I'd recommend running the old gallon through a coffee filter first. And then mix it with some newer gas for use in your current lawn mower. After filtering, it's probably OK to run through a Kia, but AFAIK, fuel injections systems can be a bit more finnicky than a lawnmower's carb.

No water, no chunks, no problem.

Pretty good variety of answers... I'm not worried about the cost of wasting the gas, I'm more debating whether I need to make the trip out to the Fairfax County waste disposal facility vs. just "dispose" of it by using it.
I just drained the lawnmower tank... it hasn't run in 2 years and I want to make sure I give it the best chance of firing up and not getting fouled. Oil looks good, air filter and spark plug look fine and engine turns freely. The Kia has been a reliable, practical beast... albeit a soulless one. That's why I have the 914. |
Make sure there are no chunks, mix a little fuel stabilizer in it, dilute in the Kia and go. You've probably put worse gas in your car straight from the pump.
