Porsche 997.2 Rear Pad Change

Hello, I am looking for some advice or help with changing the rear pads on my 997.2. I have done pad changes before on other cars but I am a little nervous about working on this car without some direction/ supervision.

The main difference between my rear calipers and all of the DIYs I have found for air cooled models is that my 997.2 rears are closed so you cannot just simply slide the pads out. Caliper removal does not look complicated (just two bolts I believe) but I am not sure how easily the pads will slide away from the rotor, what other pieces need to be changed along with the pads, if any clips will pop out once the pads are out, torque specs, etc.

Any help is appreciated. This is my first time posting here but I love reading the threads here as it helps me learn more about my car!

Welcome! I don't know the specs or what exactly it looks like but welcome to he board and jumping in to do the work yourself.

some may chime in but there are not too many on here with a 997.2 (that also DIY, etc). try searching rennlist or 6speed for DIY tutorials for brakes.

I thought you did have to remove the caliper for these? Ryan would know I should think.

Welcome.

Real easy. It's actually 2 bolts and a screw.
1) take rear wheel off
2) remove screw behind caliper which holds the brake line bracket to the hub. I screwed this up first time I did it and didnt remove this screw ( my 1 GT3 didnt have this) . Bent the bracket all up and was always a pain to change pads since then.
3) remove 2 bolts holding caliper on. they are "stretch" bolts, so Porsche says replace them each pad change. I did it about every 3rd change and never had a problem
4) wiggle caliper and try and compress pistons as much as you can
5) slide caliper off
6) pop pads off
7) compress pistons (i did it by hand) all the way in on one side, put pad on
8) compress pistons on other side and put pad on
9) replace caliper
10) line up perfectly and screw bolts by hand. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THEM ALIGNED/THREADED CORRECTLY. You strip the thread and you're screwed. Then use ratchet and torque to 63lb
11) screw brake line bracket back in

Also over time the dust boots crack and the pucks fall out when removing the pads. Makes pad changes a bitch. You can get cup car puck holders which keeps them from falling out. Eddie at racepartswarehouse.net sells them. Well worth it and fairly cheap.

I am pretty sure they are the same as a 996:
Here are some videos:

I plan to change mine in a month or so if you want to watch/help, thinking of replacing rotors too.
Last time I changed the rear pads, I remember it was very, very easy.

997.2s are differrent than my 996. It's an early 996 so...

Ryan this is excellent advice, thank you. By pucks are you referring to the vibration dampers? I am guessing the pucks/ vibration dampers are inside the piston and normally I would not touch those when doing the pad change correct?
