Wow... I'm at a loss for words on that reply there, DDD. While the 930 may be the pinnacle of Porsche excitement as far as you're concerned, I think plenty of people would agree that the 965, 993RS, GT1, and GT2 are pretty damn exciting cars. Especially on the track.

BTW, nice edit on your post. I'm going to keep your original reply here, though, so people can see the context of my response.

Geeze, who gives a fuch if Porsche makes Cayennes, etc.? As long as they still make 911s and Gaymens, all will be well in the world.

I think a lot of the bitching about Porsche 'straying from it's roots' is from people who care more about what others think when they say "Oh, well I have a Porsche" then anything else, 'cause they want the person they are bragging to to know they are a Serious Sportscar Owner and not a minivan drover...

X2, except I like mini vans too...

As usual you are just playing a losing hand with the devil's advocate stuff.

Sadly, no. I've got a bunch of pics of one I saw in the UK. Bad-ass wagon. 315 hp, 6 speed manual, 4-piston brembo's all around, and Recaro seats. Even had 964 wheels and side mirrors. I bet that makes a sweet daily driver.

If "interesting" is defined as a phenomenal track car with bleeding edge technology, then yes the GT3 is there, but a car company cannot survive without a broader base. For the money, the Boxster and Cayman are worthy examples that do not detract at all from the image laid down by the GT3. Without the "lesser" lineup, Porsche would be like Panoz or Mosler.

As long as the lesser lineup is true to the mission (not a minivan or luxury sedan) then the legend is being maintained.

I think they both started using 5-cyl design around the same time, early 80's. Completely different blocks though, developed independently.

x2 -- you hit the nail on the head.

I find it funny that many people who cannot afford a new Porsche are always so quick to knock Porsche for their most recent models.

For instance, lots of people love to knock the 996s, yet the "older Porsche model crowd" (i.e., those of us who can only afford $20k cars) are starting to snap them up and really appreciate them. Sure, they're not exactly great track cars out of the box, but how many of us still drive totally stock 70s and 80s vintage p-cars? Shoot, we've all modded them -- even ones that are street-only. The fact is, many of us who can't afford new models will regularly pick up a 10 - 15 year old model, and turn it into something that does what we want.
