I don't think anyone mentioned this yet, but if the HE's are trash anyway, cut them off with a saws-all and you can get to the nuts really easily;)
Throw the HE across the floor like they do on Monster Garage!:twisted:

OK > I'm fast forwarding > when I do the install of the new SSIs> any problem coating the studs with aluminum stuff /anti-seize stuff..... it might be sacrolidge > but that stuff is great >> withstands weather.. no rust... it's just good automotive goop... It would definitely make the removal of the SSIs a piece of cake in the future

Has anyone here tried brass nuts for the exhaust ? Had them on Alfas (exhaust manifold) and, even after 20 years, they came right off. If one did strip, it could be easily cut off and the brass, being softer, can't damage the stud threads.
I've also had great results with the silver anti-seize stuff on exhaust bolts & converter bolts (non-Porsche). Never had one seize, even on converters.

I’ve broken my share of studs removing heat exchangers. But have seldom had trouble if HEs had been removed before. Its lots easier on a stand ;) Also, cutting the none barrel nuts off is IMO often lots easier.
The off set wrench that came with my first set of SSIs made it a lot easier too. They’re in trouble too if I remember who borrowed it some years ago and didn’t return it!

BTW, if your old HE exchangers are rusted threw why not just cut them off first? Makes access to all the nuts much easier.

What is the Dorki opinion of using the aluminum paste /anti-seize compound on the new studs when install the new SSIs?? The AL paste should protect the htreads and make future SSI removal a bit easier..

I have not seen the copper version.. I'll look for it...

Personally > I think the aluminum stuff is like mechanics liquid gold [although it is not liquid]... it has great persistent capability.. does not weather off... I have put it on all exposed threads on the underside of my cars.. when I jack up the 911 for the heat exchanger swap-ex > I'm gonna coat all the brake lines... it's gooey.. and concurs people would give me a -10k .. but it protects everything..
