I moved south of the beltway and need head work. I have all the parts, need valve guides replaced, valves cut and sealed, heads reassembled, etc. I would usually take this to IMA, ASG or Chapman which used to be local to me (and I still may). Any recommendation closer to just south of the beltway, Springfield / Woodbridge area?

Many thanks,

Chris

Try RPM in Newington. Longtime Porsche guys and DE/ Club Race participant. One of the original owners' sons runs the operation these days, I believe. They work on all makes, but may still have a bit of that air-cooled knowledge in-house.

Thanks David,

They are close. I just reached out to them. See where it goes from here.

Yes, but Billy Ring is a master with air-cooled engines. He used to work with Dave Coleman, and he redid the top end of my fancy Peter Dawe engine when I over-revved the '86 race car. It was just as smooth and powerful as when Peter Dawe did it. WORTH THE DRIVE!. https://www.performanceautoworkswv.com

I understood. If he wants quality work over convenience, he will drive.

I remember hearing a lot of local Pcar shops send the heads to Burtonsville. But that was some years back; not sure if it's still the case.

I remember hearing a lot of local Pcar shops send the heads to Burtonsville. But that was some years back; not sure if it's still the case.

Pre Covid I had them do some valve guides on my 427 heads. Later had my mini engine case got hot tanked and flywheel resurfaced when I rebuild that engine. I asked if they still did pcar work. I was told the gentleman who used to do it no longer worked there and retired. They didn’t say they wouldn’t do work, but not sure they would be the same quality as before.

I visited RPM and talked at length to the owner and briefly to the son. Great guy and nice shop. He is supposed to get me a rough quote but have not seen anything. I will check out Burtonsville Machine Shop. I may check out Billy at Summit Pt. But it's a bit far and like having a relationship with a local guy for other stuff that comes up.

I spoke to Allen at Burtonsville Machine Shop. Turns out, I have been there before. Mike Mount and I (pulled him out of retirement) installed case savers, replaced the crank and rebuilt rods, etc. on my 73 E 2.4 about 10 years ago.

Looks like I'm headed to Performance Auto Group. Spoke with Billy who seems like a good guy and has done hundreds of these. Not the cheapest but cost is only and issue in the absence of value, right?

Got the HE's off last night and only broke one stud and three tools;-) If the weather stays warm I should have the heads off this weekend. Getting close. Think the hard part is done.

Since I am changing the rod bolts to ARP, Billy wants the Rods to confirm roundness. I dont plan on splitting the case. Don't know how difficult this will be.

I took the heads and rods to Performance Auto Group (PAG) in Summit Pt. Billy is a great guy. Interesting tidbit is that apparently Burtonsville Performance Machine outsources its head work to PAG.

Glad you took my advice. I wouldn't steer you wrong as Billy is one of the few left that actually knows what he is doing when it comes to air cooled Porsche motors.

He learned at Dave Coleman's knee... I used Billy for my former '86 911 race car, and when I switched to Miatas Billy also started working on Miatas. Not sure if he works on Spec Boxsters much, but he sure knows the air-cooled 911s.

Thanks,

I bought the cam adjustment tool. $80 on E-Bay.

Still waiting on the heads from Billy. Had to get new cams and that set us back. Current state, holding pattern.

Obviously way too late for this, but for next time Jeff Lyons, former Shop Foreman of Porsche of Arlington, is at Craftsman Auto Care - Alexandria, near Firebirds. Would have been closer.

Thanks Jeep,

That would have been way more convenient. Billy is doing a great job so far but its a haul to Summit Pt and back.

Does Jeff have a machine shop?

Thanks,

Chris
