I have been trying without success to find out how many Ruby Red cabriolets were built in 1983. I would not have thought this was such a difficult task, but I am striking out everywhere. I have posted on Pelican and Rennlist. I have contacted PCNA. Someone on Rennlist said they had a letter that came with their car that the PO got from PCNA. That letter stated specifically how many Baltic Blue Targas were built in his model year. The info has to be out there somewhere, but I can't seem to find it.

Anyone have any helpful ideas?

Thanks:bang:

I don't personally have one, but I wonder if that is part of the information printed on the "Certificate of Authenticity" that PCNA can provide: http://www.porsche.com/usa/accessoriesandservices/porscheservice/ownerservices/certificateofauthenticity/

It appears that the certificate costs approx $100 to obtain. Additional info available on the PDF listed on the link.

I do not think that is on there. I have spoken to a couple of people at the CoA office and they act like it is info that does not exist.

You asked on Rennlist? And those guys didn't have the answer? Then the answer simply doesn't exist. Those guys know *everything*.

Brush up on your German and email Porsche (not PCNA) :-)

are you trying to determine whether the car is valuable b/c of the color? is ruby red a pinkish kind of metallic color? different from guards and different from darker india red?

I guess in a long term roundabout way I am Harlequin. But really, I am just curious how many were made. You do not see a lot of Ruby Red cars and it is a 1st year cab. I just want to know how many were made...

Not sure about pink, but it is a burgundy color and the hue changes with the light quite a bit...

Well, I guess I kind of have an answer to my question now, though it is not really the one I was looking for...

Adrian Streather was nice enough to email me and clue me in a little. Basically, it comes down to this. The number of cars produced in each available color is a piece of data that is and will not be available. The reason as I now understand it is it is because it is tied to the VIN, and if the data to determine these numbers were released, it would compromise owners identities.

I still admit I don't quite get it... it seems like it would not be a hard thing for Porsche to just release data on the colors, but whatever I guess.

As a side note, last night while trying to research this, I came across an ad from July in the Knoxville area for a Ruby Red 1983 911 Cabriolet. The car was identical to mine in everyway. So I know there are at least 2... Ahhh, the sweet smell of progress!

I've seen this same post on Pelican as well, and obviously this is a serious concern of yours. But I don't understand why you care. Let me bring you in on a secret: Your car is not special. And the color of your car is not special.

A 1983 911SC cabriolet is an utterly meaningless vehicle, and its meaninglessness is not going to be changed one whit if, after a great journey of discovery, you uncover the fact that 126 or 32 or only 5 1983 911SC ruby red cabriolets were produced. And the reason why is because nobody is waking up in the morning and saying, "the car I simply MUST own is a ruby red 1983 911SC cabriolet." There is not one person today, or in fact at any point in history, who has had that thought. Which is why, in a nutshell, your car is not special in any way and never will be.

So my advice to you is: give it up. Find a better use of your investigative energies.

To take another pose.. 1983 SC Cabs ARE rare. They were only built one year (1983 ;) ) but more importantly they were also the first year of the 911 Cabriolet. I would be more curious which number your is than the actual color. Don't know the production numbers, but my guess is 1000 or less Cabs were brought to the US that year. Not sure where you will find how many ruby reds there were made though.

I think more likely there was a SHITLOAD of cabs in 1983. It was the first year and they were literally pimping the hell out of the fact that there were now three kinds of 911s. Targa and Coupe had to step aside for the new baby in the house. Despite the fact that there is no difference other than the top that comes all the way off, there was a separate brochure for them and everything. I would however hazard a guess that "ruby red" is kinda rare, it's kinda ghey...closest thing they had in 1983 to a boxster.

I've never understood why people think that because they drive a 911 that has the first of something -- the first cabriolet top, the first whatever -- their car is ipso facto special or more valuable. The reality of 911 cabriolets is that the absolute worst one ever made was the '83 model, because it had a 3.0 CIS motor, as opposed to the 3.2 motor that was introduced in 1984. My 1996 993 is the first year for varioram, but you don't hear me going around saying, "Hey guys, my 993 is the first year with varioram. Yay!"

So I should put an addendum on my previous post: not only is an '83 cabriolet not special, it is actually the most undesirable 911 cabriolet ever made. And the fact that this one in question is Ruby Red, as opposed to black or silver, makes it particularly unwanted.

Hey, Noah, what's up with you. You've been nothing but doom and gloom, for the past week or more. You okay?

You need to get down here for some good Dorki face time, I think. And bring your car so I can test drive it :D.
