Default Undercoating

In the process, the very slooow process of removing the undercoating from the gas tank and underside. Peeling and some surface rust. I've read the threads here to know a bunch of you have done this, so a recommendation please of what to apply after the stripping and application of Por 15. Car is on jack stands, so application has to be by brush or roller. And since I'm into immediate gratification, I want to do it NOW, so a local place of purchase, vs. mail order would be appreciated. Since I only want to do this once, any procedures, or materials I should stay away from, would be advice gladly taken.

Should probably check with Matco (or some other
Auto paint supplier) or CarCareSpecialties.com. But I use a self etching primer. Service has to be clean though.

There is a special primer to use over POR15.
I don't think it is just a sales gimic.
I might have some left if you need it now.
How much do you need?

You only need the special primer if the POR is dry. You can spray a regular primer on it when its tacky (70% dry) and it'll bond to the POR and you can paint on top of that.

Wasn't thinking paint. Since I have an ungalvanized body, a material similar to what I am scraping off is what I had in mind. Do I still need to prime? Guess it wouldn't hurt. Wondering if a product like Herculiner would work.

I am doing this same thing on my targa right now. Last night was the second coat on the rockers before the car goes to paint.

Wurth SKS is really close to the factory. It will stick to POR surfaces. I have been using the 3M paintable undercoating. I could not find Wurth products locally. Of course, I live in TX now so there may be a DC/NoVA source. If you spray it right it can look very similar.

btw, Don't get the rubberized undercoating from your FLAP. It is not the same.

I sprayed mine on using a hand held sand blasting gun. It produces a finish very similar to the body schutz gun. you want it to be coarsly applied to have a rough textured finish.

Jamie,
Can the WurthSKS product be hand applied (brush or roller)?. I don't have a rotisserie so I am looking for a way to apply them by hands. Thanks. Andy

John, there is a Matco supplier on Gude Dr in Rockville, they may be able to give you that immediate gratification you are looking for. Probably not open on Sunday though.

Did anyone mention removing undercoating is a dirty job? Lying on my back with my nose about a foot away from the underside exposed me to a hedious amount of debris. The attached photo doesn't do justice to to the amount of crud covering me. Kurt was right on the money when he stated in an earlier post that a wire wheel on a drill wouldn't cut it, an angle grinder with knotted bristles is the way to go. After this experience I'm starting to think the feel good feeling from diy is somewhat overrated.

i've gone through something similar (only partial) recently. i agree that w/o kurt's recommendation for a knotted wheel, one would get nowhere.

i also started w/ the wire wheel, but then moved onto using por-strip. it works well. not sure if i can say very well b/c i have no other stripper to compare it to... esp that "orange stuff" and aircraft grade stripper... but it does the job, with some scraping.

now i'm down to bare metal. once i clean it w/ marine degreaser, i'll put a coat of por15 and then decide what to do next. i have two versions of wurth undercoating. one clear, one black. black is said to be *slightly* more heavy duty, but both are for the underbody. if i use clear, i could paint my underbody before the application. white? silver? green? any ideas? the light colors would help me see any problems that come up, i guess the green would too.

or, i can put the heavier undercoating on top of por, and then put some paint on that... or leave it black.... does anyone know a proper application for this?

oh, i'm doing this on the passenger-side wheel wells and rocker as part of surface prep and general clean up before i start mounting oil lines.
