No not that itch! I haven't been to Tijuana to visit the Donkey Lady in ages.
I'm considering selling my car to get another money pit. 1) 1998 993 C2S, or 2) 198... 930 (massaged) Maintenance will not be an issue. Both cars would be used as "fun" cars, read: DE's and fun runs and insiting road rage. I do realize they are totally different animals. I have driven the 993 but have yet to drive a 930. I get the feeling driving a 930 will seal the deal. I've heard the accelleration likened to crack. I've done my homework on the mechanical maladies of both cars. I'd like to hear some feedback on those who have experienced driving both. Thanks in advance.

Here's my $.02: You won't like the 930. It's a straight-line acceleration car with major turbo lag. Basically, you drop it into gear, floor it, and wait for the boost to kick in. At about 3500 RPM's you get ready and the thing pulls like a freight train all the way to redline. Is it incredibly fun? Absolutely. But I cannot even imagine what that would be like on the track.
The gearing is also way too tall for the track. The gearing was designed to work with the laggy 930 motor. If you drive one, you'll understand what I'm talking about; that car would be impossible with a 915 gearbox, which feels like a close-ratio rally box compared to the 930 4-speed, where (IIRC) you can go over 100 MPH in 2nd gear. The tall gearing allows you to take full advantage of the boost, because once the boost comes on, you have to leave it in gear and let the car take off. Once you shift gears, the boost is gone. You also basically can't take advantage of the boost on the street, because even in second gear, the sweet spot ends up being above highway speeds. I drove a black/black '87 930 coupe recently, and I never even got very far into the boost in third gear. You come up on traffic too quickly -- and this was on the highway. IMHO, get a 993. I've driven three or four 930's, from the late 70's to the late 80's, and my view is that it'd be an awesome car to go cross-country in. But on the track, I can't even imagine how anyone could manage the boost on/off switch. I'd ball it up pretty quickly, I think. But there's no reason not to go drive one...they're seriously evil fun. |

Never driven anything turbo, but what happens if you stay in lower gear and keep RPM's above 3500? If you stay up there, is there still lag as you go on and off throttle?
If it's for the track, I can't imagine the learning curve wouldn't be worth the end result. Besides the power, arn't there other goodies that you get with it. Eli has said in the past that there are major differences in how his cars feel and perform on the track. Anyone here have a 930?

So many people are getting a 993 these days. Be different. Get the 930. You'll learn how to drive it on the track.

if it's been massaged, the lag could've been all-but-eliminated.... those are the exact two cars i'd like to get into someday.
the 930 will satisfy my flare-deficiency as well as provide the harmonica bumpers and the 993 will provide the ultimate incarnation of the master-car i'd say go for the 930, b/c they are getting older and older, more scarce etc.... the 993's will still be plentiful in a few years.... but, in the end, I'd stay open to both and whichever came along first (w/ the proper spec/parts/condition) that's the one I'd get. damn, you've got such tough problems... |

Put a 3.6 (or a 3.8 RS) in your car.

Have you guys actually driven a snarling, black 930?

you talked about lag and about gearing, both of which can be fixed. quicker spooling turbo, and cant you get a 5speed?? or just go to protomotive and get a turbo kit for your n\a 911. but then you still miss out on the wide body, the brakes, the suspension bits. its all in what you like. i know someone that tracks a 930 though his is modded its still a 4 speed and its not a bad car.
