Default Wheel bearing brands...

Which are better - the SKF or Koyo ones? I believe SKF are Mexican and Koyos are Japanese. Why is one better than the other?

that is true... i just fondled those recently, but at the same time, doesn't it *seem* like the japanese brand would have better quality control or manufacturing tolerances?

It's the machine tools. Not much hand fitting in bearings I'd guess.

SKF and FAG are the best. Timken a very close second.
Nowadays chinese bearings are flooding the system. They are nasty.
15 years ago it was the eastern block countries. Romania Bulgaria. Also nasty.
Japanese bearings usually have smaller rollers and the polishing on the rollers is not as good.
Sometimes if you compare the real cheap ones there will be less rollers and the rollers look as if they had been sandblasted (might have been).

The FAG in my car say "Made in Portugal". Can't say I've ever thought of Portugal as a bearing-making power house of a country???!!!! Go with a Porsche OEM supplier and you'll be getting good quality without worries.

Well I have a pair of SKF inner bearings and races, still unopened and a set of inner and outer Koyo races and bearings. I guess I'll tell ASG to use the SKF inners and Koyo outers I have.

I'll second Matt:

I have had good luck with SKF, FAG and Timken [and years ago Torrington] on my p-cars and my BMW. I'd buy them in the order I listed if I needed another. [which I probably will soon]

fwiw... a few years ago Businessweek mag did an article on Timken. The article said they have the best bearings in the world due to their huge expense in machine tools and research development compared to other mfg's..
