What is the best way to remove studs from a 25-year-old 3.0 liter case. A few of them are totally stuck. Penetrating oil, heating, even heating and shocking with cold are not working. We're looking at opening the case and machining them out but I don't want to crack open the case unnecessarily.

What type of heat are you using? They are put in with red loctite. It takes a lot of heat to pull them. put a suitable stud puller on them. Heat the case inside the spigot hole next to the stud. Don't heat the stud. Keep the heat moving along the case while putting pressure on the stud. Once the loctite heats up the stud will turn. Keep the heat on it until the stud is out.
Propane will work but expect 20-25 min of heating for each stud. Oxy-acetylene should take about 5 min. Remember, the case is a large heat sink. It will take a while to heat it up.

I have a big Oxy/Acetylene set-up at the house if you want to come play.
It's a little hard to transport, but possible. I also have a weid looking cam action stud removal tool which should give you a good bite on the stud.
