Default Got car back ... generator light on

Well ... I got my Targa back from Wagonworks II today and it looks great. Unfortunately, the red alternator / generator light is on ... not brilliant ... but on. Color / brightness doesn'tchange w/r/t rpms.

Some of you may remember ... I replaced the alternator not 500 miles ago and put in a [known good] used external voltage regulator [SEV / Marchal / Motorola setup] like oem ... I replaced the VR 1st before replacing the alternator. Will diagnose later with my digital multi-meter but ... any initial thoughts?

Will search PP / RL for threads on VR / Alternator diagnostics as well.

TIA

Jase

p.s. Yes, I wil check all other ground straps before pulling the alternator and checking that one. Thx.

p.p.s The targa is a stock '76

Given the description of the accident I’d check the ground straps. Particularly the one at the head of the trans and the Starter..
OK, you said you would but that's what I think it is (think positive reinforcement).

Does you Targa have a trailer hitch? Might be something to consider. I had this problem on my SC a while back and fixed it with new wiper blades.

Was that the left blade or right one? Cause if it was the left one, then that just doesn't make any sense!

Jase,

It is possible that the battery is low from sitting. Check the voltage as you mentioned.

Did they pull the drivetrain to do any repairs? check for a clean 14pin connector and good ground straps.

I also wonder if the diodes could be damaged from the collision. Shock can be bad for them but I suspect you would have more than a dimly lit alt light.

Thanks Jamie.

No, they didn't pull the d-train. I ended up with a new Koni F L strut though.

Will check the 14pin and the ground straps. Maybe the collision popped something off the back of the alternator. I was pretty thorough in using correct lock washers, wave washers, etc... to make sure I didn't have to get back in there to re-tighten anything. We'll see.

Test for AC, you should have less than one volt AC when you use a meter set to AC. If you have much more than thay you might have a dud diode...dude. Alt light should go out whenever the electrons flow into bat from alt. A low bat should not make light go on. Light has a diode in line to keep electron flow only from bat to alt, if alt to bat light should be off. Dim means slight imbalance of voltage from alt to bat or poor wiring somewhere. Conector hooked up incorect or loose, bad ground, wiring in dash loose.

Start with voltage with motor on and off. Look for AC with motor running.

Had a moment to test volts ... 11.85v not running, 11.77v running. Optima Redtop. And this ... with a rebuilt alternator.

Next step...need to get it home where I can work on it. Hopefully, battery will last 13 miles to get there. Will swap in a fully charged one for insurance.

Is it possible when they baked it after painting that one of
the components got too hot - or did they forget to take
out the battery?
