As some of you may already know, my RR half shaft clunk made me fail tech at ASG last weekend. Estimate from them is (both sides) $800 parts, 3 hours labor. So about $1100. My other german car mechanic in Leesburg quoted $1200 today.
1. Any other shops that could do better? 2. Ted Thomas and David Riley mentioned some aftermarket sources for the parts. Can I be reminded of these please? 3. Is this a candidate for beer and fat pills payment or am I out of line Hell I'll throw in lunch too! thanks

Me and my 7 months pregnant wife bolted up my half shafts. It's a chore and messy but not hard.

Oh yeah, there are two sizes this year I guess. I want to say 100 and 108 mm. ?
The flange plate diameter that the bolts go into? If that's it, just measure the diameter? Or will the VIN get the parts man to pick the right set?

Wow, not a lot of extra time to work with on this one.
Get them in hand and we could have a Fri night intervention at the Taj. Call me with the info (Year of your 911 and Vin #) and I can make a call to see if they are local as well. If not we can pull the right side CV and inspect inside to see if it is real bad or just starting to go bad. We might be able to get things good enough for one weekend. 571 233 3421

no rush for this weekend. I am so far off the list that I'll never get in. I will skip it all together. Even considering info shared Let me get the VIN tonight if I can swing by the storage garage, or tomorrow. Help to find the parts too would be cool. My cursory review of Pelican showed me many many pieces. I am not finding what I would refer to as a "kit" yet. Like half shafts with cv's attached, bolts, washer gaskets, etc. I could buy it all and show up with a trailer full, but no.

You can get fully rebuilt half shafts. Take them out of the box and bolt them on the car. Some of the folks here should have info on where to get them and how much. IIRC they are in the $180 range or so. I think RL has bought them before and would be a good person to chat with.

Don't know if they're the correct size, but I have a pair off my '72 I'll sell cheap. The cv joints are in good condition and cleaned and repacked last year. Didn't go back on the car after the rebuild.

I know a little something about the axels in a 85 Carrera - I just R & R'd mine a couple weeks ago. Here's some info:
- Porsche changes CV joints from 100mm to 108mm sometime in 85. To know which you have, get your transmission number (on the bottom of the transmission, near the clutch spring). 915/68s have the older 100mm axels (which is what I had), 915/73s have the newer 108mm 86+ style. The earlier ones are easier to R & R, as you don't need to break the main axel nut to work on them. - Fully rebuilt axels are about $270 IIRC. To rebuild one yourself would be about $70x2 for CVs, $14x2 for boots, $5x2 for grease and gaskets = about $180 per side. If you can get close to this number with a rebuilt axel, buy it. If not, removing the CV joints and putting new ones on is not really that big of a deal. - For 100mm CVs, if you buy new axels, you'll need 2 gaskets per side (1 per side for 108mm). If you R&R the CVs yourself, 100mm axels will need 4 gaskets per side. - Buy new CV bolts. For the old axels, there are 24 of them. This is not too bad of a job, really. Can be done in a Saturday morning with the right tools.
