I'm looking for a leakdown tester to check out my valves. Trying to determine how far the engine will need to be rebuilt.
I've somehow talked Charlie into helping me on Friday with a compression test, so I'd like to have it for the same day. Actually, not too sure of the difference, but apparently you can "hear" more of where the leaks are coming from, if the compression accross the valves are different. Anyone have one? I'm here in Frederick. I can come get it. Or if someone has one near Charlie in Arlington he might be able to pickup before he heads up here?

Are you looking for accurate measurements or just trying to figure out if and where it might be leaking?
Part of the value of a leakdown is to tell you if the cylinder is holding pressure. (Actually how much it's leaking) The other part is that if it is leaking, It will help you figure out where it's leaking. This is determined by careful listening at the typical points where the leak might occur. Taking off the oil cap. If you hear air comming out indicates problems with the rings. (I had a broken ring, It was obvious which cylinder it was and that it was the rings.) I guess it could also be valve guides. Air escaping from intake = intake valve. Air out of tail pipe = exhaust valve. Other places are head gasket, cylinder base gasket maybe. You get the picture. A stethescope will help. I have a homemade leakdown tester. A stethescope. Because I made it from some directions found on the internet, I have reletivly good faith that it is close, but not perfectly accurate. This means that in testing 6 cylinders the results are relative to each other, but, if you compaired to a factory made unit It might not give you the exact same readings. I still think it's a good tool, but just don't compaire the results to others. If Charlie comes up to Frederick, I'm not that far out of the way. He knows where my place is.

thanks bill!
yeh, since the engine is out of the car, i know this will be a "relative" test. I'll give you a call later in the day, to when i can swing by, so charlie won't have to make a detour.

thanks frankie!
Bill just leaked the info about your tester to me about 10 mins ago. We are probably just going to pickup Bill's home-made regulator/leak tester. And charlie already knows how to get to Bill's. But thanks so much!
