Default Alternator Choices ....

So ... need a new alternator for my '76 911S targa. 70 /75 amp. Could ba a Paris Rhone ('75-'83) or a Motorola ('74-'77) or a Marchal ('75-'81) or ('69-'77), don't know yet.

General price choices:

1. Delco Remey remfd- $198
2. Beck Arnley remfd- $223
3. Vertex OEM rebuilt (mfg?)- $209
4. Napa - SEV Marchal / Bosch type remfd - $170

for hahas...

5. Pelican - Paris Rhone + updates - $350
6. PP HO alt. from Aus. - $625 (95 amps though ... good for night racing or rastling 'roos in the dark)
7. Tweeks - Marchal (new) - $380

For those that bought theirs from RPM, were all of your cars SCs? Anyone put one of those in a MY car? Also, why RPM, b/c they had in stock? b/c ~$250 ...

Thanks,

Jase

Why new? Menonite place down nearby -- rebuilt mine 3 years ago with new parts and regulator - $75.

They rebuilt the starter for the same $75 with new solenoid four years ago after Heather got tired of push starting at WG.

Hey Alan:

I was going to split the gap between "new" $$$$$ and remanufactured $$ which are listed above. I'd like to get the warranty and if it turns out to be a crappy built french one in there ... replace with a different mfg. "non-french" one...if possible.

I'm one of the guys that got one fro RPM (David D is another). Both of our cars are Carreras, so the alternator has the built in VR. I have no idea what the older cars have, although I know at some point the VR is seperate. I went with the RPM one because it was the cheapest Bosche alternator I could find. I wanted to stay away from the French stuff, which the alternator repair place I took my Marchal unit to told me "was crap from day one".

Thanks Chris.

The VR was external until '81 I think I read somewhere. No matter. Will do some more research. I don't think there is a Bosch replacement for the MY cars but, I haven't ruled it out and will keep searching.

I wonder how hard it wold be to put a late model alternator into and earlier car. It would seem like a good replacement, as they are pretty easy to get and should have a higher output than the earlier models. I'd have to see the wiring diagrams of the two cars side by side, but I have to beleive its possible. Of course, such a conversion will loose you points at Pebble Beach.

It is a SEV Marchal with external voltage regulator on driver's side engine wall. Might be able to retro-fit a bosch in there. We'll see.

The alternators have to be pretty much the same to fit in fan brackets that are pretty much the same. ’81 was the first year for the internal and I tried unsuccessfully to find a replacement without one. You can always rebuild the existing one or convert to the newer internal regulator style. I vote for converting and I even have a copy of the Tech bulletin explaning how if you decide to go that way

I never thought of going to a local parts shop, dam. You have the everlasting alternator.

otherwise, afaik, etc

some track guys complain that the internal regulator cooks, some say it's bs. So I asked a local truck and marine starter&alternator rebuilder about the heat our 911 reg could handle. He said 210deg.. whatever.

then there is the issue of on-board computers being disturbed by an external regulator's dirty voltage. A simple cure is supposed to be a very good marine electronic external reg. Many guys have complained about auto quality elec reg.. maybe Summit has a good one?

Then there is the issue of up-grading to an 11 blade fan with a matching sized alternator.

anyway I would think a truck alternator rebuilder definately uses good bearings.
