My 84 Targa's headlights/gauge lights have started randomly dimming/getting _very_ bright as I drive along, even at highway speeds -- car is now off the road since I don't want to burn out any electricals.
Haven't taken a multimeter to it yet, but I'm pretty confident I need to replace the voltage regulator. Its internal, requires pulling the alternator, I figure getting the alternator rebuilt (or replacing w/rebuilt) while it's out probably a good investment. Buying a new one from Pelican for $600+ holds little appeal for me. So, where do I get a alternator rebuilt (or a rebuilt alternator) near Alexandria -- or at least within an hour drive? Will |

K & K Motors in Frederick MD. They rebuilt a alternatro recently for a guy from out of town stuck in FDK. Cost him $65 I think. If it has a remote regulator take it with you.

$600? Wow. I paid $250 2 months ago for a rebuilt Bosche alternator. I'd call a few more places - see what you can get. FYI, when my alternator was dead I took it to a alternator shop and the guy there told me spending $100 to rebuild a crappy Paris-Rhone or Marchal alternator was a complete waste of money.
At the very least you need a new regulator, which is going to set you back $60 by itself.

If you decide to look somewhere outside the local area, give these guys a shot. Prices are very reasonable. An '84 911 alternator runs about $150 and that's including a core charge of $30. So you're looking at about $120.
Many of the folks from Pelicanparts, as well as myself have ordered from them in the past. http://autoexpress.safeshopper.com/684/cat684.htm?342

I got mine from Autozone. $200 and a lifetime warranty. My local shop wouldn't rebuild it. OH well.

Got one in September from RPM in Newington; it was a rebuilt Bosch unit. Cost was around $250. Dave Riley recommended sticking with a Bosch unit -- and with 19 Porsches in his garage, I trust his judgement! :P

David, don't know that Riley having 19 Porsches in his garage is a valid test. Did you check on how many were actually running? 8)
