Default Torque and the HF Torque Wrenches

I bought this big HF torque wrench a few months ago because I needed something to torque my lug nuts. I torqued them 5ft-lbs too low and when Jim and David R took off my back wheels they said there wasn't a lot of torque on them.

On a 90-95ft-lb bolt, would you really notice that much? Maybe they we're really under torqued...

My big concern is that I'm doing a clutch job and certainly don't want to foul up all the expensive (not that wheels aren't) internal parts by getting an incorrect setting. My other two t-wrenchs are Craftsman, so I feel a better about them, but am on the fence on this big one. Eric D told me once that someone tested the HF t-wrenchs and found them to be in spec.

Thoughts?

Steve, go to Sears and buy a Craftsman torque wrench. Although I like HF for most of their tools, I wouldn't trust the quality of their torque wrenches.

That's kinda the way I'm thinking, hence the post.

Kurt showed me how to test a torque wrench - use two torque wrenches and enough adapters and sockets to hook one to the other. Then torque away and see what happens wrt clicking or dial indicators or whatever - one known good wrench can telltale another unknown quality wrench. This is assuming, of course, you have a good wrench.

They were way low. Get a good wrench or have the HF calibrated to be sure. Check with the 914guy about GMU calibration lab.

Eric's the one that told me the HF Wrenches were decent. I"ll bring it to Kurt's on Sunday.

I think the HF are good also that's why I added the "or". But good bad or indifferent you don't know untill it's calibrated.

Don't listen to Kurt! Using one to test the other is a crude way to see if one is WAY off but that is about it.

Actualy this is Kurt using Bills account.
For real!

FWIW I used the HF 3/8" and 1/2" Torque wrenches last winter when rebuilding my engine and so far everything is still working

I will bring it over tomorrow so we can see if it's "way off".
