Default New User Introduction, questions, Happy Holidays!

Howdy all,
I've been lurking here for a while but haven't gotten around to posting. Eric D (914guy I think) recommended I check this site out for some good old fashioned local Porsche comraderie.

Anyway, my story:
I live in Burke, VA and I currently own a low mileage 1987 944 and a 'project in the works' 1986 951. I have had some help from a few locals (big thanks to Eric D, Tony K and Steve) and am nearing completion.
I have a few more items left to take care of, and some of the below items are not 100% yet, but this will give you an idea of what has been occupying my time for the past 9 months or so.
Anyway, since I bought it I've been correcting some gems of PO mis-repair along with adding some fun go-fast parts.

Modifications:
John Milledge Engineering Head
Shaved to get it close to an 8.1 compression ratio,
O- ringed,
Intake ports were touched up
Exhaust port has the valve boss removed to promote flow,
5 angle valve job
JME Cam - #277
The cam / cam timing gear have an offset key to lower the horsepower / torque curve (increase boost response, lower lag).
Vitesse Stage 2 Kit -
T04E compressor/Turbonetics KKK #8 replica hotside
Quickspool option on turbo
3' MAF intake
SMT6 Piggyback fuel/ignition controller
Seimens 55 lb/hr injectors/adjustable FPR
Tial Racing 38mm wastegate
Lindsey Racing 3' exhaust
SFR Intercooler pipes
Godzilla BOV
Greddy Profec B II boost controller
Zeitronix ZT2 wideband O2, EGT, Boost and Lambda gauge (with datalogging)
New cross drilled rotors, pagid pads, stainless lines, ATE fluid
SPA Design dual gauges
996 TT wheels/tires (295's out back)
Wide fire ring headgasket
Full boat IceShark lighting/battery cable upgrade

And I'm sure a number of other things I'm forgetting.
Considering that the most in depth automotive work I've done prior was installing the stereo in my NA, I'm pretty proud of being able to get it this far. Problem is, I'm so close I can taste it, but there are still a number of roadblocks to completion.

I am in need of the following:

1) Oil line wrenches (Eric mentioned someone here may have some for loaning)
2) A 1/8" BSP tap, or a 1/8"BSP weld-on fitting (thats British Standard Pipe thread and no fun to source in the US)
3) A torque wrench capable of 500NM (~360ft/lbs IIRC)
4) Someone willing to double-check my novice belt-tensioning job in exchange for beer
5) A good idea for mounting an oil temp sensor (I don't want to drill my drain plug)
6) A heatsink to mount 2 ballast resistors (changed injectors)

And again I'm sure I'm forgetting something but thats about it for now. The best part about this whole thing is that once the 951 is road worthy again, I get to diagnose the clutch problems with my 944. It might only be a hydraulic issue (hopefully) and not a mechanical failure. Anyone here ever diagnose 944 clutch problems?

Thanks in advance for anything anyone can share, thanks to Eric for pointing me in this direction and thanks to God for allowing me to retain some modicum of sanity through this entire project. I just keep telling myself "It will be worth it once that turbine spools up..."

Happy Holidays!

Paul

Welcome, Paul. Hope to see you at one of the gathering/fun runs.

Regarding the oil temp sender - do 944s have a removable oil pan like other FEWC cars? If so, you could pull it, drill and install it there.

Welcome Paul! Any pics of your waterpumpers? Hmmm, help from Tony? Must be grooming some additional NASA 944 SuperCup competition.

Whoa, talk about upgrades!
Sounds like you have a serious 951, of course we need to see some photos of your 994 turbo. Welcome to this BBS, the people on this board do a great job in providing technical help. Try posting the parts you need in the "parts wanted" section, there are a few 951 folks on Dorkiphus that might have what you are looking for.

Hey, thanks for the responses and kind words guys. I'll attach a few pics to this post.

Jazzbass - the Oil pan is removable on the 951 but I would have to think its one of the top 5 worst jobs in the world! The crossover pipe runs right underneath it and would need to be removed (again). On top of that, the engine crossmember would need to come out, and to do that I'd need to drop the front suspension and (I think) that would involve re-aligning the front end. I don't think an Oil temp sensor is worth all that, so I might just end up drilling and tapping the drain plug.

Jim and David, lol I don't think Tony had that in mind seeing as there's no chance this car is 'stock class' legal anymore. Not even close. The NA...maybe but I'd have to ditch the competition stereo thats in there right now (I know I know, Ricer!).

PARENN911, I'll do that, in fact I see a few of the things I need in one of the other sections here. Awesome!

Alright since you asked here are some pics. Mind you the car has been on stands for quite a while now, and I don't think I even took a pic of the car before I took it off the road.

First - the motor when I got the car:

Here's the car about a month ago:

And here's the car pretty much how it is right now:

In addition, you can see pics of my rebuild process in the Rennlist thread I started a while back :http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforum...877&page=1

You can also see pics of my NA (with the crazy interior and stereo system) and my old 84 NA at my cardomain site. That site hasn't been updated in a while, just an FYI. http://www.cardomain.com/id/porschepaul
Thanks again, and if anyone has any of the above mentioned items or a source to get them, let me know!

Paul

LOL Thanks! The 924 Turbo Hood I just put on doesn't have the capacity for hood struts, hence my ghetto-fabulous Giant Wooden Dowel Hood Brace (herein referred to as the GWDHB Mod - 50 HP!).

Speaking of the hood - its about a shade off and I would like to have it repainted, along with a pair of 968 mirrors and door handles that seem to have run away from their home...

Can anyone recommend a decent shop for this? Whats the expected cost to repaint a hood, a pair of mirrors and door handles?

Thanks guys!
