Default Buttoned up ’44 over weekend

Finished replacing the bearings in the red ’44 yesterday Thanks again to “Black Talon” for all his help! We fired it up and let it run for about 20 minutes, then changed the oil and filter. Car started right up, after building oil pressure that is, and ran just like it should. Early concern about a stray “rattle” proved to be the still disconnected steering shaft. Will have to remember to hock that up before the road test Found lots of metal in the oil but nothing but fine metal dust in the filter. So it seems to be flushing out the refuse from the spun bearing OK. We’re see, but I cautioned the owner not to exceed 5 K ever again

For those that don’t remember this is my friend’s ratty '44 that I drove at VIR last year. Nicely see up, lots of fun, not much HP. He got it paintd the next week but overheated it and spun #2 rod bearing at SP at the end of the season. I really didn’t think just replacing the bearings would work with the damage to the rod cap, and massive metal chunks that came out with the oil but it did…. so far $200 and about 6 hours (engine in car, front suspension off). I’m actually glade to be wrong this time, cause like I said I really don’t like working on ‘44s Soon as the '44 is gone I start on the SC/3.2 project April is after all just around the corner 8)

Good to hear that it is back on the road. After you finish with the steering for the 944 could you hock me up a 3.6?

Woohoo! Another pumper set free on an unsuspecting public.

Slapping a new bearing under that busted cap is kinda scary, but if its what the guy wants, what else can you do??

Thnks for showing me around while the work was in progress Dave. Sure helped me plan my drop with a little more certainty.

Now, just look around and pick a new project, right??

Don't have to look far, it's really just a case of what boils to the top!

And just for the record in the last 18 months: we’ve done 5 engine drops, three 911s with transmissions, one each 931, and 944 engines (not the red car), one 931 transmission, two 944 transmissions, and one very cool Sport-o-matic. Not counting the dorki drops. Actually, managed to get a couple back together too, but no dorki's. Including a nifty 2.2 ltr. E motor, with carbs, into a nice original 914-6. Rebuilt about 8 SC/Carrera calipers and six 931/944s. Replaced 12 rotors and six brake lines. Stripped three 911s, one 924 and two 944s (got almost $150 in scrap = about $3 an hour after gas).

Not to mention the cat, SSIs, heat exchangers, mufflers, brake pads, wheel bearings (front only!), bushings, oil lines, seats, carpets, batteries, clutches, torsion bars, etc, etc. Some even on other peoples cars. Oh, almost forgot, pulled 2 lawn tractor engines too... don’t ask

You're just having waaay too much fun, David! If that doesn't qualify for some kind of Dorki award, I don't know what does.

Yes, Dave's definately award material. But what's the appropriate Dorki award for him?
