Default Instrument Lights

1980 911 SC Euro

My 17 year-old son comes home last night and says Dad > no instrument lights in the 911. [see what a good dad I am > my boy gets more 911 stick-time than I do]

I look to find the fuse that handles the instrument lights and > no joy > can't seem to find out which fuse handles instrument lights..

Interior dome light - ok
fan-ok
headlights -ok

??

Your fuse may be ok. It may just be the normal level of illumination. :P

I'm not 100% on this, but I don't think there is a fuse for the dash lights. I say this because I seem to recall a lot of threads on Pelican about retrofitting one.

The source for the dash light circuit is going to be the headlight switch. Start your troubleshooting there.

Chris is correct - no fuse.

If all instrument lights are mysteriously out, check the dimmer. Its possible that the dimmer was knocked to the full dim position.

Dash board lights are “in concert” with the tail lights (not brake). Someone way back in time thought that it would alert people to their brake lights being out. Of course they don’t actually tell you that! Check the tail light bulbs & the fuse if the other stuff doesn’t pan out.

Dash lights are not fuzed. They come on at the first detent of the headlight switch. Power comes from terminal 30, goes through detent switch, through dimmer rheostat and exits switch through terminal 58a. From here it goes to all dash lights. Twist rheostat (dash light dimmer) to check function.
If no function, lift off all black/blue and black/red wires from terminal 58a and check terminal with test light by turning knob.
If no function with test light, problem likely in headlight switch.
If you have function, then one of the dash lights or wires is drawing too much current. Track down problem from this point.

As an aside, does anyone find the lighting for the speedo to be particularly dim when compared to the other gauges? It is barely lit up on my '87 and yes, I checked the bulb.

I checked the headlight/dimmer switch and it was turned full left >> ergo no instrument lights >> turn right >> whollah >> we have instrument lights

Note to self >> check hte easy things first

The bulb? Singular? There should be two bulbs on the speedo.

Keep in mind these lights do dim over time, so even if they work they might not be very bright. Try replacing them with new ones and I bet you'll notice a difference.
