Hi All,
I have a 78 Sc with smog pump (not connected) and it was idling fine until this weekend. The cold idling fluctuates from 500rpm to 2Krpm for about a dozen times and it just died. the car cannot be restarted until I let it sits for a few hours. It sounded like it was gasping for air and the exhaust smells rich. The car never had a chance to warm up and it started on the first try in the morning. So its not the hot or cold start problem. Has this happened to anyone before and tips on how to cure this problem is greatly appreciated. Thanks again. Andrew

On CIS the vacuum lines are critical. Instead of checking, just replace them. Or atleast all the small ones. It shouldn't be more than a few dollars. This would be a great place to start. Also, I had the pipe from the egr crack and it had to be gas welded shut. Also look for leakage from the valve cover gasket.

Second and maybe while your waiting for vacuum lines you want to do the pressure checks on the CIS. This will point you to the major problems if it's CIS related.
Keep us posted! Good Luck

Just to clarify on the vacuum lines. The small ones you can buy at any auto parts place and cut to length. It should only require a few feet. Some of the big ones are noticably more but hold up much better and are easier to spot if there is a problem. Look for fraying ends. If there are any, just replace as the rest of the rubber isn't any better.

Thanks Mark and Bill, I got a couples of feet of the new Vac lines. I also am waiting for a CIS pressure tester that I ordered. It could just be the incorrect air fuel mixture. I'll correct the A/F mixture after I confirm my CIS base line settings. Also Bill, I got a chance to unpacked my library stuffs and found the factory Targa and Cab sealing guides that I told you about a few months ago. Please shoot me your mailing address again and I'll send it to you. Thanks again for your expertise guys and I'll post the updates. Andy
